Hi, I was in Hanau from 1964 to 1966 with the 695 Med Company at Yorkhoff Kaserne. I went to Eastern Europe in fall of 2010 and made a specific trip to Hanau just to see what it would be like now. Well there are no longer any American solders and all the Kasernes now have condos, stores and businesses in them. There is a McDonalds on Lamboy Strasse and they even have a 1 euro store similar to our dollar store. Yorkhoff Kaserne was gated and empty but I was told the building will be renovated and made into condos.
Hi Vincent, I was assigned to the 695th Medical Company (Ambulance) from October 1965-April 1966. Was previously assigned to the 629th Medical company (Clearing) from June-1963-September 1965. My First Sargeant (ISG Vincent Becvar) and I were transferred from the 629th to the 695th since the 629th was re-locating to Pruem, Germany. We did not have enough time left in Germany to move due to upcoming DEROS. I was the assistant Supply Sgt in the 695th for the last six months. I worked with a SSG Morales the Supply Sgt. I believe that was his name?
I was in the 629th Medical Clearing Company from 1959 – 1961. Battalion Commander was Major Bishop. Anyone remember Sgt. Hartenstine, Sgt. Evans, Captain Emerson ?
My email is 96c4@windstream.net
Stationed with 36th Medical Battalion from December 1960 through May 1963. All I can say is that it was a rewarding experience for a young twenty year old from Tennessee. I cannot recall the names of the Battalion and Company commanders at the time; but there were some great guys and NCOs in the Battalion. If you can remember the names of some of the officers and NCOs (including the young Lieutenant with the souped-up Ford directed to replace his exhaust system), let me know. My email address is bropash@aol.com or bropasch@peoplepc.com. Thanks! (I apologize if this message contains tyopgraphical errors; but my eyes are not the same as they were fifty years ago).
James, I am curious. You stay 2 1/2 years, so I think you would maybe know some of the NCOs and Officers that I knew. Which Company within the Battalion did you serve with? 629th Clearing, 695th Ambulance, 427th Ambulance. Do you know SSG Meadors (Supply Sgt 629th), SSG Morales (Supply Sgt. 695th) Sp/6 Carter, SFC Becvar, promoted to First Sergeant, SFC Gaither (629th PSG) SP/5 McBeth,Morris D. 629th Med) SFC Walden (629th PSG) Cpt Greene Commanding Officer ( 629th) Cpt. Benchoff Commander (629th Commanding Officer) Lt. Helton Executive Officer (629th) LTC Motson 36th Battalion Commander. I agree with you, it was an rewarding experience. I was only 18 years of age. Found the love of my life in Hanau. Married her 48 years ago and have not regretted a day since. We have two wonderful children. I have visited Hanau a many times since. The city is a special place for both of us.
Capt. Neil E. Bischoff MSC Commander 1961

I hope this helps.
I was in Hq Det 1961 to 1962 lived in the rooms above the mess hall 3rd floor.
From June 1963-June 1966, I was assigned to the the 629th Medical Company Clearing , 36th Medical Battalion, 31st Medical Group (Darmstadt). I was located in the Yorkhof Kaserne located on Chemitzer strasse. Not to far from the NCO/EM Clubs. The American Legion was located on the corners of Lamboystrasse and Chemitzerstrasse. One of my best assignments. During this period I worked for ISG Wilson and ISG Becvar. My PSG was SFC James Gaither. Company Commanders were Cpt Benchoff/Cpt Greene. Other units located on Yorkhof were 427th Ambulance Company and 695th Ambulance Company. The Battalion Commander was LTC Motson. This was my first assignment in Germany. The NCOs that I worked for were role models and I wanted to emulate them so I re-enlisted and made it a career. I cannot say enough good things about this duty station. I enjoyed every minute of it. A great group military people.
I was stationed in Hanau and the 427th from Jan1965 to Jul 1966. During the time there I was on TDY at the Frankfurt stockade for a couple of months (Jan-Feb ’65); then off to provide first aid medic support for signal, artillery, armor units on maneuvers. I was also gate guard for a few months and moved on to HQ S1 as the courts and boards clerk and alternate mailman (subbed for “Smitty” who also had a fascinating pool shooting support method) for the rest of the tour there until I reassigned back to the States to complete to OCS at Benning. I was present at the volleyball game when LTC Motson was severely injured and later attended the doctor who did the reconstructive surgery – on his thigh, I think. Cpt Greene, one of the few black officers I’d met, was the S04. All of the officers were top notch and great role models as were the NCOs. The 36th became a staging area for troops going to Vietnam just before my OCS tour…lots of memories of Benning.
I WAS WITH THE 695 AMBULANCE CO. FROM 1962-TO 1964
I DO REMBER CAPT GREEN HE WAS A FINE CO COMANDER I VOLENTERED TO WORK IN THE DENTAL OFFICE ON LAMBOY STRASSE
I worked for Central Texas College from 1989-1995 and 1982-1986. My father worked there also. I loved it. The people there were really great. I will never forget the graduation party they gave me.
My Wife Sandy worked at Central TexasCollege from 1985 to 1988. If anyone knows us please contact us. We would like to hear from you.
