My family and I have a strong connection with tons of good memories about W.O.D. and the Nurnberg area. I was stationed with the 240th S&S Co from 1973-77. My son was born at the Nbg military hospital. We returned to Nbg from 191-94 when I got a job there as a DAC. My son gratuated from the high school there. At broke my heart to see when soldiers vacated W.O.D. and Kalb housing was given back to the German government. I last visit Nurnberg in 2009 and flipped out to see what remained of W.O.D.
Thanks again.

I was with the 27th Base Post Office from Sept 1952 to Feb 1954. We were billeted at O’Darby but the BPO was in Furth near the railroad depot .10 or 12 of us worked the nite shift.Capt. Clifford Fowler was CO at the time but have no idea how long he stayed.Just before I left [nov.'53 ?] we were allowed civies off post before that it was class A’s only and when I first arrived there was a mid-nite curfew .No one allowed on the street or pubs and the MP’s enforced it.
Manfred., I was stationed at darby from nov59-feb62. Did know a couple of guys from 27th bpo but can’t remember any names but sargent Gallegger who was supply sargent at the time. I was with the 261st engineers working-out of their supply room as company armour.we did a lot of swapping of stuff with other supply rooms. Got a lot of free airmailliny from you guys.sargent gallagger drove a1958 Ford retractable hard top and he also worked at the base movie theater.saw a lot of free movies also. Not many guys from our era have used this site. hi there, I’m searching for any traces of my father Max Klima, who was a German Citizen, serving in the US Army as a Sergeant in the early 60′s. I have very nice childhood memories from the times when he took me to W. O. Darby Barracks in Fuerth in his Army Jeep. Is there anybody here who has some more info about him and his time there. My father passed away in 1998 and I want to put together a book for our family. Any response is welcome and appreciated. klim666@aol.com
wow, great memory Doug. I have not heard or seen any of the people you mentioned. Couple of the pictures you can spot our old bld39.Hey,any more “memories”?

Hank, its good to see your post. I enjoyed the nine months I spent there. The last five with my wife over there. I have been trying to find Ed Murray for 20 years. Do you have any idea how many Edward Francis Murray Jr there are
in the United States. I ran a check on Capt Libershall. He retired a Lt Col. I
enjoyed the basketball games against the Germans. Did a lot for my ego. Also I would like to know who to thank for screwing up Brodis’s room. I got his Sgt
stripes.
I think you are the one who gave me the nickname Smiley.
Hello Jeff.
I was stationed with the 240th S&S Co duty station Class III (POL) Feucht from 1973-1977.
My second time in Nuernberg was from 1991-94 civil service Liasion Officer with the 66th MI.
Kalb housing and W.O.D. was being shut down around early ’90. Kalb was returned to the German government and German families moved in. Families later suid the German government because of asbestos.
I visited W.O.D. in July 2009. Hard to recognize. HQ was still standing some other well preserved blg were. The field arty bks a solid brick bldg was looking good. Along the PX road now there is a park like for families with kids. The old gas station houses now a German food store.
Quarters are sproused up and looking good.

I was stationed at Darby Kaserne from March 1973 until August of 1975 with the 42nd Maintenance Company of the303rd Maintenance Battalion. Nice to know that there are still a few of us left who remember the place. I actually had an apartment on a small farm near Cadlzburg outside of Nurnburg. My wife and I lived there for 2 years and our oldest daughter was born there. Would love to here back from you.
I was not stationed there, but was a german girl that hung out at the bar on the conre, “Vicky’s Rock and Country Corner”. It was between 1989 and 1992, I have such fond memories of the soldiers we partied with. If anybody was there during that time, I would love to hear from you. I only remember a few full names, like Charles Michael Morgan from Florida, or Kevin Wilson from Oregon. But there was Allen, the MP, Tom from the Bronx, Larry and John, and so many other dear friends. I parties there with my girlfriends, Tina and Carmen.
Please, if you remember us, please contact me……

Yes , it is the same William O. Darby. Kaserne and ship. those old ships were named after General officers killed in combat. I traveled on the Maurice Rose, and the Simon Buckner. Buckner was killed in Okinowa, and Rose was killed in Holland.
Oh yes ……..those great navy cruise ships.I went over on the USN Stewart in ’52 andreturned in ’54 on the USN Heinzelman. We took the long way over and stoped off for 2 days in Reyojavak[sp] Iceland to drop off supplies and Air Force personel then down the North Sea to Bremerhaven.I’ve wondered when they finally put those WW2 rust buckets to scrap?..but they got us there and back.
THE TWO that I sailed on,Buckner was scrapped in 1997, and the Rose was scrapped in 2000, both down in Texas. the Stewart is on display in Galveston , tx for you to see. HAPPY NEW YEAR, Hank
I was a small child in 60 heading out to Germany with my Lt. Col. father, a dentist. We went over on the Darby troopship actual name I think was the USATS General William O Darby. We landed at Bremerhaven and then went to his new duty station at the Central Dental Lab in Furth but was attached to Darby Kaserne. It was pretty neat. Lived in Dambach.
I was stationed there from June 1985 to Nov.1986 in HHB 1/ 94 FA…had a blast and even played the talt show with my band AWOL. SPENT TIME at Chicago club and Luckys kneipe…the Winters were cold.I met my first wife there and my older kids still live outside of Furth.

I was stationed with 1/94th from 1985 to 1986 when I was transferred to Herzo Base. I loved my time in Germany and wish I would have taken the advise of a buddy and stayed in country for my last two years instead of going to Ft. Hood, which was simply horrible duty.
correction on my last entry. The CO and both 1SG were over the company and located on W.O.D. casern. The rest of the soldiers were a mix of 63C mechanics and 76W.

Reading all this wonderful e-mails from W.O.D. brings back a lot of memories. Hello to Bill Brubaker. For my last 9 months with the 240th I worked in the R&U shop and I was the companies liason person with the German run post engineers. Speaking native German my 1SG Patterson used me to check in person on the status of workorders submitted. I became a regular visitor and gained a lot of friends while visting the various shops. Had my regular 10AM beer with my German counter parts.
Many times I also had the same thoughts thinking of how many people I knew and how many of them are still a life.

For four years I was stationed on W.O’Darby casern with the 240 S&S Co working out in Feucht class III POL next to the Army airfield and the ammo dump. Attended many REFORGER and FTX’s. First lived in Altenfurt later moved to Kalb housing. Stood many guard mounts at Merrill barracks.
Came back to Nuernberg as a civil servant 66th MI in 1991-94. Lived in Leichendorf just below Pinder barracks. Later moved to gerhart-Hauptmann Str. Kalb housing in Fuerth. Total time in Nuernberg 7 excellent years of my life. Visited in 2009. Most of the building what used to be W.O’Darby have been removed. Only some remain. Most prominent was the U/I Arty Bn going out the back gate. Years ago renevated and now occupied by locals.
