  1. Hi Tom, we used hang around Burgies very good Pizzas a lot do you remember the monkey on the cooks shoulder, that why we had a Cognac after everything we ate,

  2. I worked at Valdez Barracks in the Property Book Office. I left in Feb 1985. Chief Growchowski was our Chief of Supply and Salim Jneidi was our Assistant Chief. Salim was a wealth of information and such a great person to work with. I had heard that the wearhouse buildings had once been stables during WW I. THe Cantina was a great place for lunch and meet friends and co workers at the end of the day. Many happy memories working there.

  3. I was at Valdez Barracks from 66-68. We handled all the furniture needs of the
Wurttenburg District. This was when we were kicked out of France. The warehouse
across the street is now a hotel. The GI’s who handled all the deliveries, pickups of
goods were all TDY. I was on temporary duty for the entire tour of Germany. What
was once Valdez Barracks is now a complex of film production endeavors. The
civilian fire station is still in its original spot. There was a Cantina in the building where we would hang out and play foots ball with the German truck drivers. I was in
charge of the scheduling of deliveries and pickups and also ran the exchange office.
There was a movie theater next door which was part of the US Military. We would often hang out at Karls Kaserne. Also, we ate our meals at Krabbenloch.

  4. Now am sure i was at valdez in 65

  5. I was @ Ludwigsburg with the 34th Signal Bn from 1972-1974, wasn’t Valdez Barracks a Class 6 Store to buy Booze? Or am thinking of another Kaserne?

    • not sure about the class 6 but i do know that you could buy a drink in the kantina…we used to get brandy in our coffee every morning .

  6. Was there a kinder school down the street from valdez ?

    • yes, ther was a kindergarten down the street from Valdez Barracks…I was there from 1983-85…my daughter went to that day care center.

  7. Was the 516th medical co at valdez in the 60′s

    • I was assigned to the 516th Med Co from Aug. 63 to Aug. 65. During those years it was located at Murphy Barracks, Ludwigsburg, along with the 428th and 651st Amb. Co., part of the 52nd Med. Bn.

    • Do you know whether and what units where located at Valdez Barracks in 1956 ?

    • I served with the 651st Medical Company (AMB) (SEP) as a 911.10 from 1960 to Sept. 1962. We were part of the 52nd Medical BN at Murphy Barracks. Other units were 516th Clearing Co, 226th Collecting Co (which became the 428th Medical Co (AMB) (SEP). I remember Coffee Barracks, Flak Kaserne, Krabbenloch Kaserne, Wilkens Barracks. I don’t recall Valdez Barracks?

  8. I worked at Valdez Barracks from 1985 to 1989, as chief of the Regional Supply Support Activity under VII Corps Director of Logistics.

I am retired now and writing a book about men from my county in Georgia who died in WW II or were POWs. One POW talked about spending time in Ludwigsburg, and I seem to recall someone telling me that Valdez Barracks housed POWs during the war. Does anyone remember hearing the same thing?

I really enjoyed Ludwigsburg. Used to walk downtown at lunch time and shop or buy delicious pastry from a bakery. I knew where all the best bakeries were (smile).

    • I had heard that the wearhouse had been a stable downstairs and housed german solders upstairs during WW I. Salim Jneidi would know the complete history of Valdez he was like a walking history book. Loved working there. My co workers were so good to me.

  9. I served at Valdez Barracks From Jan. 1971 to Feb 1972 as a supply clerk. I separated in 1972.
I served with Bennet Nickolas, Jim Lick, Dave Donnelly, Jim Leber.

    • was that barraks down town ludwigburg and 35thss btl run it.

    • I served at Valdez Barracks around the same time. Let’s see I came to Robinson Barracks/Stuttgart in Jan 71 and worked odd jobs there and at Wallace Barracks. My MOS was 76P20 Stock Control and Accounting. I believe I went to work at Valdez Barracks around April of 71. Some names I remember were Basil Monroe and Peter Rivera. We all took our AIT in Ft. Dix, NJ. I can’t seem to remember names that well, but a couple you mentioned like Leber sound familiar. I remember working on the second floor. I just cannot remember names that well. I worked with civilians mostly local nationals. Italians, Turks, Greeks etc. My room overlooked the guardhouse by the front gate. At the very top of the building. The fourth floor as we called it or the Penthouse. We shared the floor up there with local nationals who worked at the warehouse across the street. Also the shower. Yuck. These turks used to shave their bodies and leave nasty hair stuck to the shower stall walls. Otherwise it was nice. There was a small canteen in the basement where I used to eat and drink on credit. Played a lot of fuzzball and played a bunch of pinball games. The canteen owner used to make these small sandwiches which I lived on. It was great. So was the Dinkleacher German bottled beer and other Pilsners. We could buy it by the case which we often did. I cannot remember the SFC in charge of us there. His last name started with a “V”, Vernon I think. Sometimes I would have to work at the warehouse across the street which contained furniture etc.., I would get to unload and load trucks as they came in with a fork lift. It was great fun racing the fork lifts also. I mostly kept track of the books. Shipping and receiving. I sometimes would have to pull guard duty around the warehouse at night but mostly in the little guardhouse by the front gate. It was eventful to say the least. Weekends found us guys hanging around downtown or seeing the large Ludwigsburg castle or just tripping in our room or exploring the grounds. There were tunnels under the building. Like they were used as bomb shelters at one time during WWII. Some say the tunnels lead all the way to the castle. There were times we caught the bus to Pattonville and on to Robinson Barracks to catch a movie or see friends. Go to the PX. There was a beer joint across the street from the PX we all used to eat Pizza and get drunk at called by us “Burgies.” Well Back to Valdez. I left Valdez and came back to work at Robinson Barracks after about a year n half. Worked above the CID floor in a housing department. Typing orders for incoming familes for their quarters. I left Germany in Sep 73.
