I was mail clerk for HHC. Stationed at Illesheim ’69 to ’71. 1Sgt Benjamin Peacher was Top Sgt, Sgt Ripley was Supply Sgt. Both of these men helped me get my head screwed on straighter and I’ll remember them forever. Would love to hear from them. Sgt Peacher went to be a recruiter in Allentown, PA.
I was there from 10/69 to 5/71 with Charlie Co. 2/51 Inf 4th AD / 1st AD. I lived on the top floor of the barracks next to the mess hall. Had some good times and some not so good, just Army life. I remember a restaurant in Bad Windsheim that had a big wrought iron rooster on the side of the building, we called it the “Chicken House” and a great place to eat.
I was the TAMMS Clerk / Parts Clerk for “C” Company with Jim Mayo, SSG Kenneth Monnette, “Cheif” Welch and a boy from TN called Cagle. I remember a Curtis Parker of NC that was Capt. Gustavason then Capt. Lee’s driver. Lt Klandron was Motor Officer.
I got a question for you guys that were stationed here quite a while back. Im stationed here now and i have heard that there are/were tunnels beneath the post. Does anyone know anything about them??
I was stationed there from May 1968 – February 1970. There were tunnels under the base as it was once a German airstrip in WWII. The planes would land and after the last one landed they would flood the strip. The planes went underground and the tops of the buildings had grass and livestock on them to make it look like a lake when our planes flew over. When I was there some of the German planes were still underground. Some of the buildings, like our old motor pool had machine gun holes in them from when the Air Force finally found the base. The closed off a lot of the tunnels because they were afraid explorers could get hurt down in them…hope this helps…
Yes, in 1970, a soldier from HQ, 4th/35th Armorer had a manhole cover fall as he was climbing out, crushing all four fingers of both hands. He spend many weeks in rehab, and I believe they began sealing off the access holes shortly after.
I was stationed in Stork Kaserne with 2/6 Cav ARMT Dawgs from 07/90 to07/94. If any of you who was station assigned to 2/6, 6/6, or 4/229th during thoes years???
Estuve acantonado en las barracas Stork con 2/6 Cav Perros de Armamento desde 07/1990 hasta 07/1994. ¿Alguno de ustedes estuvo en 2/6, 6/6 o 4/229 durante esos años?

I was with HHC 1st Bde, 1st AD from 85-87. I was the company armorer and worked in the supply room. Would like to get in touch with anybody who remembers me.
I was stationed in Illesheim in 1990 1991. I was an MP in the 615th MP CO. I have many wonderful memories of the place. LOTS of time spent in the Green Goose. Does anyone know if it’s still there?

Hello friends;
I spent 12 years in the army and I live only 12 km away from Illesheim.
I speak / write no English. But I hope your time on German-
Knowledge?
This is currently a big discussion going on about what Barracks closed
should be. Illesheim also as a location of the 101 st Cavalry is here under discussion.
So today is the 02.02.2012 in Ansbach / Katterbach new to be said of
the U.S. Army. Does any of you, if left Ansbach / Illesheim?
Would be a shame for the people here. The helicopters do not bother me in any case,
even if you pass every day in my neighborhood here in Steinach / Ens.
As I previously mentioned, I was stationed at Storck Barracks, Illesheim from August 1967 – August 1970. I lived in government quarters building# O middle stairway Ist floor on the Kaserne. I had a many good friends both military and Germans during my tour. I still have contact with my best German friend who now lives in Allgau. His name is Manfred Reichert. His father’s name is Hans, sisters Lydia and Corrina. The father was the vendor of the AAFES Beauty and Barber shop located on Storck Barracks. Manfred’s sister Lydia, is now the vendor for these facilities…..just a great family. During the time that I was there Illesheim had only five (5) GastHauses. They were recognized by Military personnel as GastHaus 1,2,3,4,5,. Our favorite two places were the Yugoslavian restaurant to eat and the Lindenhof to dance and party. It was a nice Disco/Bar when we were there. We also spent a lot of time in Bad Windsheim, Markt Bergel, Burgbernheim, Langenzenn which had nice places to visit. Back then, the Clubs had Live Bands every Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays. The German/American relationship has always been very good in that area. Even today friendliness is still noticeable. My daughter lives in Obernzenn. Storck Barracks was a very tight knit community and everyone pretty well knew everyone else. I spent my entire 3 year tour working at the 36th General Dispensary. We were the first ones to move into the present building in 1967. We had a Dental Clinic, and an Optometry Clinic co-located with us in the new building. It was my best assignment during my 22 year career in the Army. The doctors that I worked with were, Drs. Kurtz, Roma, Smuckler, Ivy, and a German Physician Dr. Neumann. Dental Docs were LTC Stegman, Cpt, George, Cpt Ilko. I replaced Ronnie Herendeen as the NCOIC. Mike Platta was our supply clerk. Are there others out there that served in Illesheim during this time frame? If so, sure would like to hear from you.
Hello Larry,
Do you remember me? I was there with you, from January 1967 to August 1968. We were medics together in the same platoon in HHQ. I drove armored personnel carrier HHQ32 (the one with the big red cross on it). I think you were my TC for a while. Some of the other guys with us were Parker, Sink, Kirk, Lawson, Lazick, Moss, Rusk, Cheskis, and Dunaway (these are all that I can remember right now). I was there when the dispensary was on the main floor of the MP barracks at the front gate. Then we moved into the new building where I was assigned for a couple of months, then I was reassigned as Charlie Company’s medic for the rest of my tour. Would like to hear from you too.
I was with the 4th Armored from May 1968- February 1970. My favorite place to eat was #5 with Peter the owner…great schnitzel…in fact you mentioned Dr. Kurtz…believed he treated me when my legs got messed up….
I was stationed there from 12/1970 to 11/1973. First at HHC 2/51 then that changed to 1/6 infantry and I went to C Co. Had some really good times in Bad Windsheim and even the little gasthaus’s in town. Spent a lot of time in Markt Bergel, too. The best time were in Rothenburg and Frankfort. Went back in June 2010, as my son was stationed in Wiesbaden. Spent 3 days in Illesheim and Rothenburg and it still pretty much the same except you must enter thru the old back gate now. Was able to locate one of the girls that hung with us.She was always a partier then but now she’s married to a banker in town and is choir director at her church. She remembered those days and me and was still real pleasant to see again.
Hi Hal,
In reading your narrative where you said that you were assigned to the HHC 2/51st Infantry. That’s when the unit was a part of the 4th Armor Division (Patton Division) located at Cooke Barracks at Goeppingen, Germany. The 1st Armor Division replaced the 4th during the year 1970 (Fall). I PCS’d to Fort Ord, California in August 1970 and Storck Barracks was still 4th Armor Division. I am like you, I also had a great time during my tour of duty at Illesheim. I always look up my old friends when I am there visiting my daughter.
Looking 4 any good friends i lost around the greengoose ,rainbow bars, desert storm, the old tank trails,or the lake out in the country !last seen naked and drunk !around the year 89-91.sum aka names”suddafed, bobo, dicweed, jimbo, also have a slitly dented “cut v”4 sale! need tools 2 pull from german bus luggage bay!wont run but would make a great paper wieght!
I was assigned to 1/6 Inf. from 1989-1990. I had a great time during this time, I spent many nights at the Green Goose like many others.. I miss those days.. The best.. I had a german girlfriend that I really miss.. Her name was Dagi Popp. Real name is Damar Popp.. She was a sweet girl.. we were so young.. If anyone knows anything about her please contact me.. Just want to know if she is ok and how she ended up.. Just want to know!
Your comment is interesting. I was assigned at Storch Barracks from August 1967-August 1970 after completing a tour of duty in Vietnam.I knew a lady that worked at the Post Dental Clinic located in the 536th General Dispensary. Her name was Ingrid Popp. Just a super great lady. During this time I remember the Dentists LTC Stegman, Cpt George and Cpt. Ilko? I also knew a Joseph Savoie and the Lab Tech in the Dental Laboratory. He was from Puerto Rico and was married to a German lady. I worked in the Emergency Rm, became a X-Ray Tech, later became a Pharmacy Tech. Then, I was assigned as the Dispensary NCOIC. I had daily contact with her. I remember she had a daughter which was very young when I departed Illesheim. I am just curious that she may be related to Ingrid and I have try to contact Ingrid over the years. I hope we both have luck in finding the Popps. My daughter is teacher at the Illesheim Elementary School working for DOD.
Ron would you happen to know if Dagmar’s mother’s name is Ingrid? Did she live in Illesheim close to the Illesheim Bahnhof? I believe the name of the street was Bahnhofstrasse.
I was in Illesheim from 79-81. 1/6th, MAC, A co. Can not forget some great moments and buddies as well as the snows. Winning the Challange cup, the reforger, guard duty, fake elerts, and great outdoor concerts. Dying to hear from crazy sgt melin and the family from florida, Jack from kansas whom got shot up by sgt melin (long story), Espinosa, Shapie, Zack, anderson, easter, taylor and many many more. Can not forget the nights with case of beer chilling on the window ledge, game of space and good old rock & roll blasting.
I was living in Illesheim at the same time, but as a dependant. My Dad worked in the motorpool behind the dispensary. As a teenager at that time, we spent a lot of time in a club called the Kleine Eins (not sure of the spelling), but it translated in to “Little One”. Lots of memories and great friends from Illisheim.
I also have one horrible memory that saddens my heart. I played softball for the DYA and our coaches name was TJ. I remember the playground at the grade school was blocked off and mp’s were everywhere. They had found TJ hanging from one of the swings… he had committed suicide. What a horrible day that was.
& Stacy’s reply to Yong Kim: Stacy, I too was there as a dependent during that time (’78-’81;my dad was with the 1/13 Armor); lived in “S” building. I seem to remember something about the suicide thing you mentioned…
Was assigned to Storck Barracks from Jan 63 until Aug 65. Initially with the 149th Det that was absorbed by the 592st Trans about a 1 1/2 after I got there. Barracks was upstairs in the hanger across from the PX. Visited in 2003. Much the same except new billits have been built.
