  1. My father was in the first german officer training after WWII.
He was invited to an ‘Combat Command Demonstration’ conducted
by Combat Command C 2nd US Armored Division at Baumholder 18-19 July 1956.
I still have the invitation and the program.

This document is standing for over 50 years of cooperation in ours armies.

I don’t want to throw it away, and not to sell.
But i would like to give it away to someone who cares.

Is there a museum or a collection in Smith Barracks?

    • Do a Google search for USAG Baumholder and leave a feedback message. There is also a history page on that site site.

    • Google USAG Baumholder, then leave a feedback message on the webpage.

    • I was station at Baumholder for 3 tours never heard of a museum there. After I left
in 1975 the 1st Arm Div replaced the 8th Inf Div, the 1st Arm Div set up a scrap yard
on main post. Lots of old tanks and SP artillery. They may have had something in
one of the buildings but, I wasn’t looking for it. I have been back there about 10 times
using the camp grounds and snack bar as a civilian with camper. Last trip in 2007.
The 1st Arm Div left some time ago; the 170th Inf Brigade is there now. The 170th
will be gone next month; this means that there will be NO COMBAT TROOPS (GROUND GAINING ELEMENTS) in Baumholder. The post is not closing; some surport units will be there Jim Smith 13E & 82C Artillery (That was NINE years)

  2. I was stationed in Baumholder from 1982 to 1984 at 2nd Birgade Headquarters. I was in the S3 shop. Wonderful times would really like to see it now.

  3. I was stationed with the 8th Infantry Division Artillery from August 1977 to August 1979, in the S-3 section. COL Basha was our Commander then until the helicopter crash in June of 1978. I operated the Radar Chronograph for the Artillery Battaloins, and I worked in the S-3 section with whatever else we needed. Master SGT Screen as our S-3 Sergeant.

  4. I was stationed in Baumholder (1979-1982) as the Reenlistment NCO for 3d Brigade till I DEROS’d in ’82. At Brigade I worked for Col Calvin Waller then Col Gary Luck. Gary Luck is still around but Gen Waller died in the early 90s at Ft Lewis, WA. Both were outstanding officers. I still have contact with a few friends and neighbors. I lived with my wife Bonnie in a set of quarters right across the street from Smith Elementary School. I had the pleasure of visiting Germany as a tourist in 1995. Talk about De ja Vou. It was weired going back to Baumholder after so many years. Alot of changes. Most all of the Housing Quarters had been remodeled. The NCO Club is no longer an NCO club, now it’s for all ranks. There is a giant Esso gas station down by 3d Bde Hqs. It was also a strange experience being scrutinized by Security at the Main Gate. Then I tried to cash in some Travelers Checks and was limited to a small amount. I also had trouble getting gas for my rental car cause it had German plates on it..But all in all, I’m glad I went there. We took a little side trip to Idar-Oberstein also. Downtown Baumholder was still pretty much the same, just grown quite a bit. I recommend anyone to try doing the same if at all possible.

    • I was on “The Rock” 1980-1982, MILCOM, Director, Army Community Service. I was a CPT at the time. This was a great tour of duty with the 8th Inf Div. I remember, very well, Gary Luck and Cal Waller – great Soldiers! GEN Luck, at a later time (1984-1986) was our ADC, 101st Abn Div. Ric Brown and Dave Palmer were our ADCs, respectively, with the 8th and Swarzkopf was one of our ADCs. Both Ric and Dave retired as LTG, and Dave was Supe at USMA. Steve Layfield was with 1/87 Inf and retired with the rank of Major General.

I did not know there was another John Lucero in BHR, What a small world.

      God Bless

  13. I was in C 1/68th Armor third platoon from Feb68 to Nov68, hung out at the Jaeger Hof in another village whose name I can’t recall it was on the same road that went by the Rod and Gun club on base. Also at another place in the same village owned by a crazy dude named Willy who had been a SS paratropper in WWII.

    • Richard,
I was in Co. C 1/68 from March 67 until Sept. 68 and was in HQ Platoon. The nearest village to B-Holder was Reichenbach. Have you been in contact with anyone from C 1/68?

    • Hi Chuck,
No haven’t run across anybody from Baunholder. What did you do there? I was in third platoon tank C-32. Do you remember 1SG Conner, he was third plt sgt then became 1SG. I still have my 8th Div Pathfinders Association card signed by him.

    • Richard,
I was the Commo Chief. Yes I remember Sgt. Connor. I believe Sgt. Rindfuse (sic) was the plt. sgt before Conner. My e-mail is citrusseed@tampabay.rr.com. I have been in contact with several of the guys. Send me an e-mail directly to me. Thanks.

    This was not fair!!
Hi: What did 81st ARTY do in Wiesbaden to be moved to Strassburg Kaserne? The people of Wiesbaden just didn’t see the fun the Airborne GI’S were having downtown!! I spent 3 tours in Baumholder with the 8th Div Arty. The depot at Nahbollenbach is all gone; German Industrial Park now. There is a highway right down the middle of Idar right over the river; no more one-way on this side and one-way on the other. Lots of trips back to Europe; I try to stay at the camp ground in Baumholder near the Community center; last trip in 2007.

Though the 170th Infantry Brigade, which includes roughly 3,800 troops, will be eliminated by this summer, the Army’s garrison in Baumholder will remain open. The brigade will be replaced by logistics and engineering elements currently stationed at Schweinfurt and Bamberg, Hertling said.

“Baumholder will reduce significantly,” said Hertling, referring to a 40 percent cut to the Army’s footprint in the community.

The move will leave Baumholder with 2,000 soldiers and about 3,000 family members, according to USAREUR.
