  2. We were stationed here from 1979 to 1982…..I so loved this beautiful country…..My youngest daughter was born in Frankfurt in 1980…..We lived off base before moving into base housing…….I will never forget, our oldest daughter learned to count in German from our “landlord”……she would come downstairs to have some cooked rice with cinnamon……wish i could remember her name…….
The first time i ever got my drivers lic. was in Giessen….I took the road test, but, never got the “parallel parking test”…….The old man that took me on the road test told me that i didn’t have to take the parallel parking test, cause i was a good driver…….yeah……
Again, we returned to Germany for our second duty station….this time we were stationed in Darmstadt from 1984-1988…….My only son was born in 1986 in Frankfurt……My children did not want to leave Germany……they are all grown and have families of their own……

  3. I was assigned to A Co. 16th Signal Bn 1962-64. I really loved my time in Butzbach even if I really didn’t get to spend much time there. My platoon was in the field so much, I actually spent more time in a tent than in the barracks. However, because we were in the field so much, I got to see lots of Germany….that is west Germany. I think my favorite little towns were Runkel and Wetter. Most of the guys in my platoon got to know and became good friend with a couple of guys from Runkel. They even took their vacation time and stayed with us in the field. We taught them how to play football (our version) and they always called me an American fossball star. They were really great guys and part of what being there made life so good.

  4. From late May 1951 until mid-October 1952, the Schloss Kaserne in Butzbach was my home and the home of the 3rd Battalion of the 8th Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division. I was drafted in October of ’52 and became squad leader of the 4th squad, 2nd platoon in Company “K” and I think we were the first American troops to move into that Kaserne. We were the first division of the newly formed NATO and spent a lot of time in the field at Wildflecken, Grafenwehr (sp?), Romrod, etc Saw a photo of the old turret by battalion headquarters on Google. Anybody remember the marches through the alley across from the main gate and up the hill?

    • Hey John,

I was in C Battery from July 78 for about a year until they moved the Fire Support Team (FIST) to HHB. Did you work in the orderly room? I remember Kevin George, Wayne Parker (maintenance section maybe?), Dave Brown, Arnie Lund….Jorge Luis Echevaria Quintana (can’t believe I remember that…he was my room mate when I first got there). 1SG McElroy. Battery Commander that was relieved…can’t remember his name though…Cpt Swanson maybe. I left Butzbach to Ft Riley in 1980 and came back to HHB 2/3 FA in 1982 and stayed for 3 more years. We moved the Battalion to Kirch Goens during my second tour there.

  7. I was in SVC Brty, 3rd Arty, 3rd AD from Nov. 1959 to Jun 1962. We move up the hill to Ayers in the summer of 1961. Revisited Butzbach a few years ago. It seemed strange going back there 45 years after my tour. It’s still a nice little town.

  8. I was there as a dependent 1979-82 – lived in Butzbach and attended junior high in Giessen. Would love to reconnect with others who were by age there at the time – specifically looking for John Sullivan, whose father was a general there at the time.

  9. I was stationed here during 1974-1977 as an MP with the 564th MP Co. It was a great place to be stationed.

    • I was there between 1979-1983. I was the Motor Seargeant and Bonnie Hiller was my clerk. It was a nice area. I played in my country band every chance I got. I still have memories of all the places in Germany, good and bad.

  12. lived on schloss kaserne but worked in the 11medical despensary in 1961 1964 in the housing area.out side of butzbach.

  13. My mother and her parents are from Butzbach, Hans & Wilma Bohlefeld. My mother’s name is Brigitte. They ran and owned a pub/restaurant called the Pickilo. It was located one block from the markplatz. I was very young but remember the americans coming in all time. My father was Hans W. Reich who was also in the Army but from Germany. We remained in Butzbach for several years before coming to the states. My grandparents and father have passed away, mother lives in the states. Does anyone remember the Pickilo, have any pictures?

    • i do from 83 to 84 , i was a 45 delta turret grease monkeywhile i was there

    • I don’t remember that business but i grew up there from 1971 to 1976 at Butzbach elem. Not sure why I went to this site but only to remember where I grew up. All I have is fond memories of Butzbach and where I grew up. Military brat is what you would call it. Came to state till 1986 got married and my husband join military. They shipped us to Gelnhausen, but I made it a point to visit Butzbach and I couldn’t believe the candy trailor on top of New York Street in housing was still there. Just blew my mind. remember going to the schwimbad in the forest every summer. I hope this email reaches you.

  14. Hello Eugene.
I am ethnic German (Volksdeutscher) and I also immigrated as a 9 year old with my brother (19) to West Germany Aug 1950. My father months later was released and joined us in Bavaria. We were taken in by my oldest brother. Later on moved to outside of Cologne and in April 1960 I immigrated to the US. I now reside in Arizona.
Take care, I don’t know Schloss Kasern but got a few haircuts at the mil barbershop in Butzbach.

    • Hello Bruce,

I came through Butzbach in April/May 1950 on the way to immigrating to Australia, as an 11 year old, with my family. I’m trying to get some details of conditions at the time. Since you were there only a year later were you there dealing with immigrants or on purely military duties? If you dealt with immigrants what are your memories?
If you have a moment I’d be interested in any information you may have.
      Regards,
      Eugene
I have been living in Melbourne for many years.
