    Hey Johnson,
    I remember you! I was How Bty from 1969-71. I started in FDC with Archer another new guy. Then I was sent to ammo section and later gun 6.
    After your transfer to Oberammergau, I was sent there in April 1970, for a two week special weapons school and I looked you up. Remember the old Luftwaffe factory inside the mountain next to the base?? We went inside with flashlights
    searching the tunnels for old WW II aircraft.
    Oberammergau was preparing for the Passion Play that year.
    Truly a beautiful Bavarian village!

      Brad, I remember you and Archer too. I think his name was Dave. If I recall Archer didn’t like it in Bayreuth and got himself transferred to Door Gunner’s school and on to Vietnam. I also remember going thru the tunnels near the school. Not much to look at, but we had a great time. Paul

    I got there in October ’69 and assigned to FDC, then transferred to USASCHEUR Oberammergau in January ’70. Got in trouble one night for going AWOL, but she was worth it!! Took top’s extra duty instead of Art 15 but the LT got me out of it after 1 night. My time there was short but sweet.

      Paul, Thanks for your response explaining Archer’s disappearance from How Battery. I give him a lot of credit going from artillery Germany to door gunner Vietnam. That was a serious change in MOS and tour of duty!! Hope he made it home OK.

    I was there in 70-71 in the FDC section. looking back we had some great times.I remember the morning we were all in formation and the Star Spangled Banner came blasting out of the upstairs window. Capt.Clark wasn’t to happy.Any of my old cohorts out there – it would be great to hear from you.

      Looks like I just missed you. I was there in 1975 – 76. Stayed a short time at the O-Club in downtown Bayreuth until they came up with quarters for a couple of female en route air traffic controllers on “the rock.” We had 2 1/2 helicopters (one for parts) based there. Our primary mission was monitoring recon ‘copters along the border but a typical landing advisory frequently consisted of winds, altimeter and “caution tanks on the end of runway x and sheep on the end of runway y. We’d lean out the window to check the weather. Had several German pilots land because they were shocked and amazed to hear a female voice on the radio.

      One of the funniest things I ever saw while leaning out the window was a small group of Howitzers chasing a big German rabbit off the end of the runway. Couldn’t say if it got away or not.

      I remember liking a Company CO named Cpt. Bird. Met him when he came to the airfield to talk to our pilots about air support for various exercises. Seemed like a very nice man.

      hey woody i was stationed at subpost hwb from sept. 1979 til nov. 1981. i was on gun 2 sgt.larry ball section. sfc jonah howard was the gunny and francisco cavasas was the first sgt. i remember dirty girty,s rite by the barracks and the the falters gashaus downtown bayreuth,i hope that helps.

      Hey Woody! I was at sub-post 81 till they moved us to the rock. I was in the survey section. Don’t remember many names from that time. Just a lot of memory’s of getting off and being at the 1st gasthaus in 5 mins. The runs through town and the scallys. Along with the massive amounts of beer in every room!!!

    i,am looking for a soldier who were stationed in bayreuth or in the near from bayreuth in germany maybe in the years from 1977 till 1983. He had a Girlfriend at this time, her name was Manuela Gast. I do not have any information, just the name of her Girlfriend and that he was/is an a soldier (latino american or afro-american, i am not sure).

    I remember Richard Sullivan – survey section.
    The names he listed above brings back a lot of memories!
    I’d like to add a few more- Webber, Wilson, Reeves, Kirk, Devoe, Bradley, Davis,
    “Shorty” Redden, Brandenburg, Sisson,Caruthers,Marchand, and Dewitt.

      Hey Boggs, I remember you very well.Remember that training trip we made with Red, yourself, Steve Steed (company clerk) and all down to school and the long train ride. Ah fun times indeed. yes Charles Wilson, Caruthers, Shorty, and Slim!

      The Cold War at it’s best. I was Lt. Fischer’s (F.O.) Driver (“How 2″) October 1970 – January 1972. I lived off-post most of the time. We had Nukes. A guy named Powell blew up a jeep gas tank in the motor pool in late 1970. Willie Boykins flipped-out on LSD (someone put in his Alka Seltzer). The fake Chaplain on The Rock. The Purple Microdot in the Officer’s Coffee Pot day. The Jimi Hendrix Star Spangled Banner Command Reveille, Summer of 1971? A few more names… Wiley Taylor, Bob Mertens, Ken Dixon, Steve Taylor, Ray Guerrerra, Paul Maubach, James Dahm, Larry Eades, Warfield, Cpt.       Hey… you guys remember two German girls that used to work in Housing at Sub Post? One had black hair* and one blonde. I have a friend in Bayreuth now who knows *her… I saw a video of her recently. She still looks good. I remember the German women in the Snack Bar at Sub Post… funny, always joking. On fashing, she wore a dress with hands sewn on the tits.

      It was great reading your June 14 response. I’m living in Richmond, Va.
      Too bad we don’t live closer!
      I remember very well the trip you mentioned. NRAS/Special Weapons training.
      Bayreuth-Stuttgart by jeep in the winter. We froze and the class had been cancelled. We were sent again the next week by train. Stopped in Nurnberg for some R&R on the way back. Those were the good old days. I hope other members of How Battery will eventually find this website.
      Have you visited Christainsen Barracks website? Someone has submitted a recent photo of our old red How Battery barracks. It has been remodeled into condos or new apartments.

      Woody, Hey dude, my wife and I are headed that way in Sept. of this year.
      Planning on going to bayrueth to see the old place!
      I have a couple of pictures when you, Tim Dunlap(Bumper), Steve Perry, Popeye(can’t remember his name) and another guy I can’t remember his name either and myself went to a Frank Zappa concert in 1979. The pics were taken on the train going there! We got drunk as shit that night!!

      i was their from oct 68 to oct 69 art survey then went to a clerk in motor pool wa in special weapons was driver for the survey unit then came down on a da to vn rember don sue a a member then capt lewis w as our co and sgt gore a supply sgt and don’t remember the tops name

      I remember Sgt Gore, he had some run in with a guy chasing him in the hallway second floor with an entrenching tool, remember a chuck taken out of the wall when he swung it. I remember the guy being up for court martial.
      1/3 of the people were stoked on hash all the time, unbelievable stuff. I remember Sgt Ucklemark, (spoke fluent german) There was a Sgt Freddie ?? who was forward observer, had a room at the end of the hall opposite the latrine. I had the second room, shared with four guys. Mickey Mecklenburg, cowboy from Montana, Rod Erickson, he’s passed away, met his son on facebook, looks just like him. If I can dig up some photos sometime I will and try to post. I’m leaving out info and names, a lot of crazy stuff went down in that place.

    There used to be an old apt building across from sub post in the 60′s we lived there, my Dad was a mechanic at Bindlach and my brother was stationed there in the 80′s sometime. I have been stationed at Wildflecken and Kaiserslautern.

      I lived there and my dad was the Master Sgt in the Mess Hall Sgt Potter 64 65 till the french threw us out. I met my first love there, I was 17. He was a Lt. John R Vincent anyone know him?

      Hey dude I was in 1st squad 3rd platoon, I was the track driver until i left for ft. steward i 92. Have you heard from the other guys I lost contact and was just wondering what everyone was doing. I miss the good old days border duty and gunnery and all. let me know whats up
