I was at Patton from 1958 to 1960 with the 4th Signal Group, Building 114. We ate at the 529th MP Mess Hall. That was the best mess hall in the US Army! Thank heavens for Rhodensteiners!
All of the bars in HD known in the 60´s have closed over the years. Pop´s, across the street from the main gate has been torn down. The “Last Chance” closed several years ago. The “Disco” wave killed a lot of them. Now the the population of military members has dwindled and those left can not drink more than three beers without trying to start a new war. Times have changed.
Paul, I remember the name Mansfield, but not a face to go with it. I have been in Heidelberg since `63. I rotated in `65 and came back as a civilian three weeks later and made my way employed in German companies. I have contact with Harry Roth and Allen LaFaive. Bobby Haston passed several years ago. Patton looks about the same. The 108th motor pool is all buildings, mess hall is there but closed. All goes back to the BRD within the next two or three years. Everything is going to Wiesbaden. I speak the language and can get along. We had a Paul Thompson in the unit at that time. He was from J´ville, Fl. He married Inge from Ziegelhausen. He went back to Fl and died in a car accident. Okay, hope to catch you´s on here again some time. As Germans say: “Keep your ears stiff!”
I was stationed in Heidelberg and lived at Patton Barracks 1973. I came over from Ft. Campbell. When I arrived in Franfort, they needed MP’s, even though I was11H they assigned me to the 529th. I transferred late 73 to Bosco Mantico with SETAF 509 th Airborne.
Ron,
Thanks for letting me know you knew Bob Mansfield. His nickname was “The Hook” and he talked about returning home in NYC to become a police officer. Hope he made it. Norm was from Stevens Point, Wis. if that jogs your memory. Again good to hear from you.
rbritton@rochester.rr.com Hi Dale , Don,t no if you remember me? I was there same time 108th&503rd,then transfered,to176th Eng. to drive the Low Boy. Thanks Ron Britton
Dale
Did you know Bob Mansfield or Norm Zakrewski? They were good buddies and norm and I were in basic at Ft Leonard Wood together. Both were in the 503rd TC
Dale, I remember a big guy last name Hatch, and I remember a guy who,s idea it was to put bows on the S&Ps to haul the Sofas standing up? I see faces but not names.
I was a member of Co.A Special Troops at Patton Barracks from July 62 to Jan 65 and was assigned to Staff Message Control in the Command Building next to Campbell Barracks. I was a SP-5 (E-5) with Delta shift. Our unit commander was Major Richard Jensen and senior NCO wass SM Bardell. During that time CINCUSAREUR was General Paul L Freeman Jr. I would like to hear from anyone who was there then.
Hello Paul…. I was with the 529th during that time and was on guard duty with SGS . I opened the front door many times for General Freeman while on duty. I remember a Sergeant Major at the command building when he purchased a new silver XKE Jag in 64. Give me a shout at press4toys@windstream.net
Thanks for the note. I did not know guys from the 529th, but you may have checked my pass coming thru the gate or at the command building. I do remember how tall your guys were – at least six feet as I recall because the 529th served as an honor guard for dignitary visitors also. I had the chance to visit Heidelberg a few years ago and was surprised at high the buildings looked the same. The units were all different and a German outfit was in mt old barracks so I guess they have come full circle.
I was assigned to Logistics Division from the end of April 1962 to September 1963. I was billeted at Headquarters Company. I arrived in Heidelberg in time to see the change of command from General Bruce C. Clarke to General Freeman. When I was stationed at Ft. Totten, Bayside, New York, I saw an account of the breakout of American soldiers surrounded by the North Koreans. General Freeman lead the breakout. He was a Colonel at that time.

Kilborne Kaserne was turned over to the German Govt. yesterday! One can see it well on Google Maps.
