  1. I was a dependent at Nellingen from 1972-1976, I am wondering if any other dependents are out there. Played Basketball and Baseball.

  2. I was stationed at Nellligen from May 1956 to November 1957. I was Operations officer for the 87th Ordinance Battalion . I was in charge of collecting the money from the four companies in our battalion, to pay the Germans for KP duty, among my other duties. Anybody remember those days?

    • Hi Kathie

  7. Anybody remember the small Funker Kaserne east of Nellingen Barracks, across the Neckar River? I used to live in Scharnhausen and I see Funker on an old USAREUR map. Just wondering, what was at that small installation? There was a small rifle range nearby. Funker not listed on ArmyKaserne. When was Nellingen shut down?

    • Funker-Kaserne in Esslingen was given back to the German army in 1956. There was a Bundeswehr medical battalion stationed in Funker-Kaserne till it was closed after the wall came down.
Nellingen Barracks was shut down in 1992 and almost all buildings were demolished. You should take a look at William Bils “history of Nellingen Barracks”:

    • Anna….thank you for the great information! I lived in Scharnhausen most of 1971, and commuted to Patch Bks over at Vaihingen. I miss that little town, and remember having fun shopping in Esslingen. Wish I could go back and do it over again. Were you stationed at Nellingen? If so, when? In any event, Danke, Anna!

    • Gern geschehen! No, I’m German – still grateful for your protection during the Cold War (I grew up near the terrifying East German Border).

    • Thanks, Anna. What town near the boarder did you grow up in? I have a good friend here in Seattle who grew up in Breslau, Silesia, and she became a DP and by 1947 finally was settled in Fulda. She just finished writing her fascinating autobiography….now looking for a publisher. Have you seen the German movie “The Lives of Others” which takes place in East Berlin? Yes, life there must have been terrifying as you say. Its all so historically interesting what with all the changes since 1989. It was a long time coming!

    • I grew up in Northern Bavaria, the Bamberg-Coburg-Schweinfurt region. As a kid I always thought, all the evil of the world lay behind that high barbed wire fence with its watch towers.
Living in Berlin in 1989 it was an unforgettable moment to see the wall come down.
And yes, I watched “The lives of Others” documenting “Stasi-Life” in East Germany.
      Viele Grüße

    • Anna, I recently read a book very much to do with your Northern Bavaria area, called “Enkampt” I believe it was, American author. It’s a very good book dealing with the battles in that area in April 1945, when the Allies believed the main German retreat was to a large Bavarian mountain redoubt that had been built. (wrong.) Thats why the 3rd Army turned south/southeast after crossing the Rhein instead of continuing on to Berlin. The next 45 years would have been very different for Berlin & the DDR if they hadn’t turned.
I really like the current crop of German actors; Bruno Gantz and Hugo Ferch in “Downfall” and “The Bader-Meinhof Gang” movie, which I enjoyed very much as the latter movie was close to my time in Germany 1969-72. Have you read the book “The Reader” and can you comment how the movie compares to it? (I’ve not read the book yet.) I loved the movie. I understand “The Reader” was a very popular book in Germany.

    • I don’t know the book “Endkampf” but I read otherwise about the “Alpenfestung”. Historians are still debating whether it was just SS-propaganda, meant to fool the allied forces or the last dangerous attempt to stop them. And what would have happened if…
Of course I read the bestseller “The Reader”, German title “Der Vorleser”. But I didn’t go to the movie. I never do because I’m always disappointed by the film version.

    • “Endkampf” is by Stephan Fritz, 2004. Has alot about the areas south of yours, in the Steigenwald und der Frankenhoae in Upper Frankonia. Have you ever been up to Berg Hoheneck? About 50 km SW of Bamberg. Wonder what that is like today? Are you still living in Berlin, or elsewhere in Germany?

    • I agree with you about movies & books, nevertheless the movie “The Reader” was very high quality. Is it off the mark to guess you are a student of history? (Your knowledge of Funker Kaserne impressed me.) two current books I value are After the Reich by Giles McDonaugh & 1945 by Robert Conroy. two books I want to read soon are Linda Hunt’s “Secret Agenda” and the related Pledge Betrayed by Tom Bower. What books have you read that you would recommend ?(hopefully in english translation, my knowlege of German is no longer what it once was.

    • Guten Tag Roger. Don’t complain about your German, it’s pretty good. Did you visit the Hoheneck Castle (we say Burg)? I remember being chased up that hill on one of those countless school excursions on a hot summer day. I haven’t been in that region for a long time but I heard that the castle was renovated in the 80s and will probably be looking down on Ipsheim for another 100 years.
      Enough for today, Fortsetzung folgt.

    • I hope I’ll find the “Endkampf” somewhere in Berlin. I got stuck in this city, after all you get the best “Currywurst” here. Joke, but after 1989 I didn’t feel like a prisoner anymore. History? That’s really off the mark. I learned a lot from my father who was a sergeant major in the German army and very interested in history. There’s no book I would like to recommend right off.
Auf Wiedersehen oder Tschüss (not so formal)

    • Guten Tag, Anna! Danke.
Reading about deine vater ist sehr interessant. Forgive me for asking, as I am learning as I go, but was he in the Wehrmacht oder Bundeswehr? Or both? I was born in ’49, so if my father was a career solder he could have served in 3 or 4 conflicts, concidering our track record. Joke. I find it intersting I am here since I never served at Nellingen; life can be very interesting.
In “Endkampt” it describes Burg Hoheneck & Ipsheim in detail during April 1945 and about how important they were to the Nazi parties festivals, rallies, sport competition & arts festivals thru-out the ’20′s & ’30′s (I never made it there, but would like to someday). The play “Arnold von Hoheneck” was performed there many times & Ipsheim became sort of a Nazi “Bayreuth.” But perhaps you are familiar with all this? Do you recall if the cemetary the “Hero’s Grove” was still up on the Burg? Hitler,Hess&Goebbels attended Ernst Poehner’s funeral in ’27. (I can imagine you getting chased up that Burg on your school outing :-) .
Two books about Berlin that I read recently are “1933″ by Philip Metcalfe (1988) & “Weimar Germany: Promise & Tragedy” by Eric D. Weitz (2007). Both are brilliant and make me want to visit Berlin, even though both capture in detail the Berlin prior to the war. I still wish I had visited it as a G.I. Maybe someday yet. “A Woman of Berlin” by Anonymous is great & “Berlin Diaries” I own, but haven’t read yet.
You joke about Berlin currywurst, yet down in Stuttgart I loved the schwabian weisswurst und brotchen with that strong mustard they served it with, along with
some Schwaben Brau; or maybe it was the other way around. Do they still make that old Prussian beer, I think the brewery’s name was “Pinkus?”
Don’t want to get in trouble with AK admin for taking up too much space, so will close. (Should we go email?) Viele gruesse, Rudiger

    • Guten Abend, Roger (it’s about 7 pm our time)
I agree. This is a great website and a nice administrator. I don’t want to annoy him either. Could you leave an e-mail address?
      Viele Grüße

    • Hallo Anna, hallo Roger,

St. Louis/MO. Dort ist registriert das US-Militaer in Deutschland.
Roger SIE muessen Deutschland wieder besuchen. Sie kennen es nicht mehr:
Viele US-Barracks nicht mehr existieren. Dort stehen Wohnhaeuser.
Berlin ist jetzt soooo schoen. Keine Mauer, keine Grenze, viele, viele neue Haeuser.
      Besuchen Sie Deutschland wieder!!!!

    • Hallo Roger,

      Go on the website: http://www.billybils.de

I think this is very interesting for you.

      Greetings from Germany

    • We have a nice, tidy thread going here….makes it’s so east to find where we left off. Gisela, I am amazed at your initial posting, I can read about 80 percent of it and understand most of what you are saying. I thought I had lost all my skills….two years of University German in 1973-74 was sooooo long ago. I remember reading German novels of my favorite German author, Theodore Sturm! He was so…….pre-Raphaelite. (sorry, I don’t know how to do umlauts).
Yes, email will provide more room to practice my Deutsch! You both are welcome to connect with me at: Hagartysrock@hotmail.com
