To be more specific the unit was ;
How Btry 3d Recon Sq 1 14th Armd Cav
C.O. was William F. LaComlbe 1st Lt , Arty as of 29 Jun 60
Sargent Fortenberry was the Sgt Maj as I recall.
Does anyone recall the name of the Gasthaus ( Bar ) closest to the barracks. General directions were ; After exiting the main gate one would turn left , continue down the hill past the dispensory and the EM Club to the bottom of the hill. The bar where the GI’s frequented was down stairs. My best recollection is the name was CASINO.
Probably a good bet that even if you were not there when I was , GI’s probably were regulars before and after my tenure. It was within walking distance from the barracks. Some may even remember the walk to the establishment was easier to navigate than the walk home.
Anyone ? ? ?
Hi Bill
I got there in 1964 as a pfc i drove a 155 mm s/p canon for How Btry. They gave me the asst/gunner job in 1965 and i made cpl.The best of my recollection the nco club was outside the fence and at the bottom of the hill on the left past the dispensory and the Em club was up by the back fence. It was along time ago and i could be mistaken. If there was a guesthouse in bad hersfield I have been there,do not recall all the names but we at that age 18 loved to party.
Bob , thank you for your reply.
I was in the Fire Direction Center.
Ever wonder why all those alerts were at 2 AM ? We all jumped up, fired up those tracks , and ran to our hiding place in the woods. All the enemy had to do was follow the trail of broken down vehicles to find our secret hiding place.
The EM Club fence was the easiest fence to jump back into the compound if one happened to party past that stupid mid-night curfew. The mid-night curfew contributed to my inability to join the ranks of those granted the right of passage into that hallowed NCO establishment.
Great experience that I really did not fully appreciate then.
If you haven’t viewed the Dietz videos suggest you check them out.
Right about that 18 & the party hardy !
At soon to be 72 the mind is willing to party but the rest of me says let’s take a NAP !
BE WELL !
If you have not seen the Deitz videos on you tube you should check them out
on the web.
” Deitz video’s 14th Armd Cav Bad Hersfeld ”
They are great. I believe he was there in around ’66. Best part was he returned in 2005 – 2006.
Always wanted to return but it didn’t work out.
Deitz was in commo and as I recall that was the same barracks as ‘D’ Co Eng.
Good Luck . Hope this Helps .
A friend of mine is looking for his father named Rodney Allen Young. All we know is that he was stationed with M Company and we don’t have anymore for info to this time. All we know is he was stationed there 1980-1984. If you have any info that could help us find him or anyone knows him i will forward the information to his son Thomas. Thank you guys.
I was stationed in Bad Hersfeld from 6-76 to 10-77 at Sub Post Community, attached from Fulda to the 3/11ACR. I worked for/with Captain Ronald J. Henderson,Sr., SSG William Burdette,SFC James Hammon, and SP4 Charlie Dopriak. I spent alot of off-time at The Rod & Gun Club too! I remember “Sally”, “Pappy” and Colin who worked at the R & G club! I would like to hear from any of the above mentioned people (or ANY info about them) or anyone else who was stationed there during the above mentioned time frame! Thanks guys-Happy Veteran’s Day to all!
I was stationed in BH with the 3/11th ACR from May 81-83. I was in HHT- S4 M577 Driver. Does anyone remember SFC Vandlandingham- Support Platoon Platoon SGT- HHC?
Hi Bob,
We were in Bad Hersfeld with you. Wasn’t it great!. Do you keep up with any of the I troop group. Would love to know where the Huggins, Daniel Lucas, Jim Tillman, Doug Carter and Sgt. Story are these days? Do you ever hear from any of them.
Where are you living after retirement?
Keith Nowlin
I was stationed in Hersfeld from October 1977 to October 1979 with the Hawk missile unit. I still enjoy the memories from there, not necessarily the work though. The day I brought my wife from Frankfurt I was going to borrow a car from someone in my unit(B Battery 2/2 ADA) and two guys from the Cav unit grabbed me and thru me against the wall. It was two guys I went to school with but it scared the crap out of my wife. She’d been in Germany a total of 3 hours.
Hi, all! The Spivey clan was stationed in Hersfeld from 71-72. Wondering if anyone is from that “era.” lol Would love to reconnect with some old friends.
Stationed there Jan 65 – Jan 68 “M” troop 3/14 ACR. LTC Braunstein Commander. Plt Sgt – SFC Richardson. Got there as PFC left as SSG. 2nd best assignment I had in Germany. Best was 76 – 77 Bad Tolz Instructor NCO Academy.
Hi Bob! I am Howard Braunstein’s daughter. I am sure he would be proud to know that you ranked your assignment in Bad Hersfeld as your second best, but he’d have wanted to know what he could have done to make it your best! Daddy retired as a Colonel in 1975 at Ft. Ord, CA. Sadly, we lost him in 2002, and he was buried with full military honors at Arlington. If you’re ever there, go by and give an old soldier a salute and maybe hum a few bars of Garry Owen. I know he’d appreciate it!
I was stationed twice in McPheters barracks. 1965-1968 with the3/14th ACR, I Trp. and SQDN.Maint. and 1973-1975 with the 3/11th ACR M Company and How Battery.
I was a mechanic with I Trp. and Sqdn Maint. and later the Motor Sgt in I Trp. with the 3/14th ACR and the Motor Sgt of M Company and How Battery with the 3/11th ACR. Met many wonderful people while there.
HI, everyone. I am Jack Thompson. I was stationed in Bad Hersfeld in ’71-’72. I was part of A Company, 3d Recon Squadron, 14th Armored Calv. I just found this page, and think it is great. Just for giggles, does anyone remember my CO., the one who ordered the removal of the M-47 tank from the Graffenwier firing range, or the Lieutenant who commanded the M-88 (VTR) that pulled said tank? I was riding in a Red-Eye (Commo) jeep on the return trip.

I was stationed in Bad Hersfeld 1954-55, Headquarter Barracks
I sure do remember the hole in the wall, I didn’t smoke so I would take my ration
of cigarettes, lay it on the table and wait. Soon someone would nod to me and
go up to the mens room, I took my carton of smokes with me and sell them for
20 marks. It was funny to see him stuff them down his pants and leave.
The master sergeant was named Highstreet. I was a radio operator
Do not recall that name, Turn right out the main gate walk to the bottom of the street, turn right and about half way on the right was a nice little bar or guest house. I was there with the 155 mm unit 1964,1965, and part of 66. Any one remember Cpl. Douglas or Sfc.Bobo who was the section chief.

I too was in Bad Hersfeld at the time. The Lt. you are asking about was Lt. Taylor. I believe the Cpt. was named Grant.
