I remember that also I was with 1/51 i was a generator mech and that day I had just fixed a 4.2 generator on a como apc. They told us to stay off the radio about 3 minutes before you guys got hit. We were up on a ridge and one of the guys had seen it happen so we broke radio silence and called in. It seems like they wanted to send in choppers but they could not fly I may be mistaken about that as it was to many years ago. Also I was in tent city when a chopper lost power and missed our tent by 200 yards we heard it loose power and then it hit both guys lived but badly hurt. Paul
Hello Weapons Platoon: Tell JohnBoy (John Waters) I quit drinking and earned a B.A. in History at ASU and a M.Ed. in Adult Education to keep me busy instead.
I was at Mckee Barracks, Aug. 1973 to March 1975, B-Battery, FDC section. Sgt, Elroy Thompson, Spc Gary Leindecker ( if I spelled Leindecker wrong, sorry “Pops”). What a time with a great bunch of guys.
I was there from Jan 75-June 76 in the 1/51 Medic platoon but spent most of my non-field time in the Dispensary. I found a bunch of former ‘sheimers over at the McKee Barracks Facebook page. Tommy Martinez’s discussion about the lightning incident at Hohenfels definitely brought back memories. I was there and can remember my neck hairs standing on end when we got nailed by the lightning strikes. At first we thought we were being hit with artillery. The PFC from Texas was a Native American. I remember dog tags and metal boot string eyelets smoking and trying to establish airways with their jaws locked up. I am still amazed those guys survived. Definitely learned how to un-a$$ a hilltop that day.
Looking for a few guys to re-connect with:
Joe Godeaux was a 1/51 Medic from Louisiana until early 75.
Daniel Crawford was in the Maintenance Company (I think) and was from Atlanta. He was in a bad auto accident coming back to post late one weekend night. Got hurt pretty bad and got out on a Medical in early ’76.
I’m at msfoglemanatyahoo.com and live near Charlotte, NC if anyone wants to get together.
Hello Fogleman, I am one of the guys who got nailed by lightning on 7/5/75 at Hohenfels. While I don’t remember you, I have been in contact will Tom Martinez who I will always be greatfull for saving my life. It’s good to here from someone else who remembers that day as it’s hard to get the VA to recognize the severity of the situation. I would be very greatfull for any Information or memorys you may have of the day as it could help me with my VA claim. I am in Northampton, Mass. and just retired last July as a High Pressure Boiler Operator. I hope you have done well all these years and wish a long life to you and yours. Hope to here from you.
