  1. To Raymond Weinstein,
The Jewish services were held on Friday night in the ‘non denominational church’ building at McGraw Kaserne. We had a decent size community… I think it was Rabbi Robin in charge. I married HIS Jewish Chaplain’s assistant. We were all in services on a Friday night there… where the doors opened and people of all faiths began piling in…. the Rabbi tried to tell them we were having services. One man went up and whispered something to the Rabbi… and the announcement was made – our President JFK was dead! Hundreds of mourners came into the Church/Temple that night!

  2. My Dad was stationed at McGraw Kaserne and we lived in Perlacher Forst from 1962 to 1964. I had just moved from London (hence my English accent) I clearly remember my Sweet 16 party with my date Dave Baker (where is he?) and a bunch of teenagers from the high school. We went to the movies to see Bye Bye Birdie at the base. I met my husband in Munich…. he was a soldier. But, I’m still looking for Gary Burnett, Hank Belmonte and Glick Herndon (all soldiers at the time!) Great times, great memories!

  3. Out of my three daughters, two attended University of Maryland in Munich and lived on Campus. We all attended my middle daughter’s graduation in 1990. I remember distinctly the Liz Clairborne black dress I bought at the PX for her graduation. One of my all time favorite dresses!! My daughter met her husband at University of Maryland. They married in 1998 in Munich and had their reception at the Muich Hocker Haus. Her father-in-law was the principal of the Memmingen School. He bought them an apartment flat near the Olympic stadium. My daughter’s husband studied micro-brewery as his major, and did his meister prufung at Paulaneer beer. My daughter worked at a German law office. We loved the area, we loved visiting the base. It was always interesting at the end of each school semester at U of M, the amount of electrical appliances the students threw out into the dumpster. Sometimes they did not even bother taking the stuff to the dumpster, they would fling it out of the window, trying to make points for actually making the object go directly into the bin! Around that time, a lot of Germans and third country nationals would come by to gather all these items the students threw away. At the end of each semester, each student had to pack their belonging and move out, only to return the following semester. It was not allowed to keep their belongings in their rooms. Most students did not have car themselves, or they could not get their parents to move them, lock-stock-and-barrel at the end of each semester. Or they were just too lazy to pack. Anyway a lot of people living around outside the base picked up many useful small TV’s, toasters, hair-dryers, electrical ovens and frying pans, irons, microwaves, coffee makers this way. I know. I was one of those parents who had to re-stock my daughters’ rooms over again!! My daughters went directly from campus housing to one of the AFRC Hotels in the area to work for the summer. Bertchesgaden, Chimsee, Garmish area Hotels employed many of the U of M students. All three of my daughters worked at one of the AFRC hotels during the summer school vacations.

  13. My family lived in Munich from ’1953 to 1971. We were American civilians. My father, John Van Wart, sold to the military. We all spent alot of time in McGraw and I at Munich American Elementary and High School. When I look at the list of all the Kaserne listed, the names are so familiar – I often went with my father to these places.

We all adored Munich and I miss it.

    • I saw your note on the web. I was stationed at Henry Kaserne in 1960, and often went to McGraw Kaserne on the other side of Munich. I am writing a book about my time in Germany. Can you help me with details of McGraw Kaserne at that time? I’d like to know (1) where was the mess hall that I would have gone to when I stayed at the transient barracks? Also (2) could G.I.s who were not enrolled in the University of Maryland go on campus and look around and speak to someone about college? And (3) have you any information about the University at that time? Thank you for your help.

    • Raymond: I attended U of MD in 74 and 75 , if you have any questions. Deb, did you spend any time on Campus? My roomate dated a Deborah whose father or family lived in Perlacher.

      Keith

    • Did you go by another name when you were there? I attended MAHS from 1969-1972 (we left that summer). My dad worked for AAFES. My maiden name was Andi Eisenkraft; I have a younger sister named Margie.

    • Keith, I was at U. of M. from ’75 to ’77.

    • Hello Walt.
Small world. You and I don’t know each other but you checked my badge at HQ 66th MI Grp prior to entering. I first worked with ODICS on McGraw but was assigned to the 5th MI Co. I remember the MP barracks near the Stadelheim prison on to way to the 5th MI Co and 18th MI Bn buildings across the Mittlerer Ring. Went back in July 2009 to visit Perlacher Forest, McGraw Kaserne and of course downtown Munich.
      Adolf

  16. I was station at Texas Area near Unterfaffenhofen Germering. I was there in 1964-65 at Headquarters Company 242nd Quartermaster Bn

    • Hi I remeberTexas Area near Unterpfaffenhofen-Germering, was right down in the woods. I remeber because Iam a girl (at that time…) years ago, from munich and still live not too far away from there now. Also was married to a G.I. once. Munich is still a great place and its my home town, after I came back from the -states.

  17. I went to McGraw Kaserne in 1972. Worked at AAFES HQ as a secretary (I was recruited in the UK). There until 1983. My name at the time was Lynda Dove. Would love to get in touch with people who were there. I live near washington dc now.

    • Lynda do you remember me

    • Mrs.Dove-Garcia,
I was a student at U. of M. from ’75 to ’77. I had been in the AAFES a few times back then.

    • Hi Lynda,

I remember you. I worked at HQ AAFES-Europe from 1972-1982. You probably remember by husband, Skip. We left Munich in 1982. He has since retired. The last division I worked in was Plans. AAFES has a facebook page for anyone who has ever worked for AAFES.

  18. MY father and my family were stationed at Mcraw Kaserne. I don’t know much about what he did there. I have enjoyed the pictures I have seen on the different sites.
What kind of post was Mcraw ?

    • Hello Angelia.
McGraw caserne was a nice place to be stationed. My self and family were stationed there from 1979-82 with the 18th MI Bn/66th MI Grp. We lived in Perlacher Forest. Everything was there movie theater, PX a medial clinic, American school and a commissary. HQ 66th MI Grp was on Mc Graw and had a small snack bar. Munich was one of the best assignements the military could offer. Beer capital of the world excellent shoping and Garmisch with the Alps nearby.
      Take care,
      Adolf

  19. I was with the 18th MI BN in 1972 and 1973 translating Czech newspapers; althought the work was rather meaningless, the friendships that developed were amazing. Some still remain, but most have vanished. I loved Munchen and Napoli’s pizza was the best. I am sad to see that the McGraw Kaserne is no longer. Cafe Henri was also a favorite and had the best chocolate cake. The juke box there had one American song, Eric Burdon and the Animals singing House of the Rising Sun. We played it over and over. I didn’t care much for the Army, especially after going through the Olympic massacre and the scare it put into us at the time. I remember standing guard at McGraw with our M16s, only they didn’t provide us with any ammunition!

    • I saw your note on the web. I was stationed at Henry Kaserne in 1960 and often went to McGraw Kaserne on the other side of Munich. I’m writing a book about my time in Germany. I need help with some details, and can you help me?
      (1) Where was the mess hall I would have gone to when I stayed at the transient barracks near the main gate? (2) Where were the Jewish services held? (3) If a soldier died in Munich, where is the nearest military cemetary that he would have been buried in.
      Thank you for your help.

    • Spent a lot of time in Munchen – 66th MI Gp, McGraw Kaserne and at the 511th MI Bn Detatchment – located above the AMEXCO Bank across from McGraw Kaserne – from 1977 to 1980, Lived on Cincinnatistrasse – near the (then) US Army Hospital. Was originally living in the Housing Area, Perlacher Forst, Muchen, FRG from 1972 while awaiting Housing in Augsburg – but went to Bad Aibling and Bad Tolz, FRG instead. Enjoyed all my eight + years in Germany and Europe. BTW: I was assigned/in Munchen when the Linguist/Interrogator – from the 18th MI Bn went – “On Leave (?)” – up to the 3rd ID (Marne) and ended up leaving his wife a Widow.

    • Was at the 66 MI Group HQ building from 1981-85. Brand new 96B right out of Fort Huachaca. Worked for Ed Rybak in Humint Ops. Most of my friends were with the 18th MI and had a couple in the 430th as well. My wife and I lived in the Perlacher Forst Housing area on Pennstrasse. My oldest son was born at the local German hospital in Harlaching. Loved taking the S-bahn into the city center on the long summer days after work.

    • Hey Dick, I was with the 430th. Your daughter took piano lessons from me. You introduced me to Chinese food!! Where are you and Carolyn living now?
      I’m still in touch with a few from the 430th & 66th.
Sadly, COL J. Barry, CSM Adams, SGM St Louis, Scotty and Doug have died.
I finally divorced that hateful woman that I was married to and have a beautiful German wife who has put up with my mess and has kept me in line for the past 14 years.
