Mansfield Kaserne was my home from February, 1962 until late in 1964 when our unit, the 8th Ordnance Company, was being de-activated along with the 11th Armored Cavalry which was later reassigned to Viet Nam. Looking back, the Kaserne was as good as other Kasernes I had seen with many older trees and red-roofed buildings. The barracks were rather primitive, given technology at the time. Our room on the 3rd floor was heated by a coal stove. The coal was stored in the cellar, so whoever got the duty had to bring buckets of coal up many flights of stairs. Needless to say, the third floor rooms were often quite cold in the winter or when none of us were willing to make the effort. Thank God for army parkas! If you want to see the 8th ordnance website go to: http://8thordnance.com/.
Greetings to all that served and my German friends as well. Perhaps Siegfried-Kohlrus (see previous comment) were standing next to each other when he visited in 1962. Viele Gruesse, Siegfried!
