  1. I was stationed at Ledward from December 1962 through mid-June 1964. When I first got there, I was assigned to D Company, 1st Battle Group, 30th Infantry… before the army reorganized into ROAD. My CO was a CPT Cochrell. After re-org in June 63, I was assigned to 1LT George Joulwan’s Company A, 1/30th Infantry, as the platoon leader of the first platoon. I met up with Joulwan again when we were in Vietnam together in the 1st Inf. Div. under Bill DePuy. Joulwan eventually reached four-stars and was NATO CG. Anyone remember the Melodie Bar in downtown Schweinfurt?

  2. I got there in December, 1962, just before the battle group/battalion reorganization, so I was a platoon leader with D/30th. After the summer of 1963, I was transferred into the new battalion organization, as CO, 1st Platoon, A Company, 1/30th Inf. under 1LT George Joulwan (eventually General George Joulwan, NATO Supreme Commander). One of the best fighting units anywhere. And the Melodie Bar downtown…?! Yikes!
