Hello, Robert, I lived on Herzo Base for the years 1962-1964. If, as you say, you worked at the front gate then we saw one another many times. I was a junior and senior in high school at the time and attended Nurnburg American High School. My father was Major Charles Friedlein. He worked in the head quarters building adjacent to the front gate. We lived in the house just beyond that building next door to the colonel’s house. If I remember correctly, Col. McFadden was the commander at the time. There was a Major Wagner who was a pilot who lived on the base….I remember that family because I babysat for them. There was also a dentist by the name of Dr. Green. He went on to have a practice in southern WI.
The Cothrin family lived in the apartment building just inside the gate. He was a cryptologist, I think, but not exactly sure. Hope this brings back a few memories for you. Christine
Stationed at Herzo with U.S. Air Force, Jul 1961-Sep 1962. (OL5, 601st Tactical Control Squadron) Many good memories of Herzo, especially evenings spent at Cafe Kern (since closed) quaffing Bamberger Hofbrau.
My brother, Jerry, had been stationed there back in ’58 or ’59 as an ASA troop.
My dad Glenn Lutton was stationed at Herzo base 1947-1950. He was in charge of the “listening unit” and had the code to radio activity back to the States.
I was only 3 y.o. when we arrived and 6 when we left. My childhood memories are of the house we lived in and it was located in town.
Anybody have information about “officers row” housing in Herzogenaurach during those years.
I was also a flower girl in a wedding that took place in a nearby cathedral – any ideas where that might have been?
My name is Gay Elizabeth and it is a nickname for Grace, my mother’s name, hence the unusual email name.
Thanks guys.
