  9. I was stationed in Hanau from June 62 to Sept. 64, assigned to the 1st missile battalion, 32nd artillery (Honest John). We shared Francois Kaserne with the 4th of 18th. Our unit was transferred to Fleigerhorst in late 63-early 64. I’ve been wondering what became of the old Kaserne and was pleased to see that there is now a vets center on the site. My wife and I are planning a trip to Germany next year (50 years since I caught the Bremerhaven Special to Hanau) and I wanted to come to the town, walk down Lamboy and see what’s become of the old place. If I could get any more info on the vet center I’d really appreciate it.

    • Hi Harry McNamara, I have some pictures after you left in 1964 and they are of 1965 . They are of the mess hall, motor pool area, head quarters and of Flieglehorst … If you need pictures pb10240@windstream.net . Paul Buresh

    • Harry,
I was a 19 year old punk kid from Chicago when I joined the Survey Section of the 1st/32nd Arty (Honest John) at Francois Kaserne in Sept. 1963. If you are who I think you are, you were a very slender SP-5 who enjoyed reading Time Magazine.

I would enjoy sharing war stories with you. Please email me.

Wikipedia has a good write up of the 3rd AD’s history. Wish I still had the pictures, took lots of them before digital, unfortunately.

I recently cancelled a trip there, I’ll grt back if I live long enough.

    • Frank, I have fond recollections of Maj. Dingwald. He was a little “Plumb” for an officer. Heck of a sight during Battalion Retreat formations on Friday nights wearing the old Burmuta shorts uniform.

I was Infantry (MOS 11B), assigned to Svc Battery motor pool as a Ballalion Motor Pool Dispatcher. Always had to write out the (Form DD2400) “trip ticket” to leave the kaserne or field tng excecises. Most of the guys always complained about me being so slow at it. I can remember people like Steve Davidson Bn Welder, Ted Wessell, James Taylor, Sgt Gillespie, Lt Col Lloyd A. Corkan, Bn Commander, Walter Peacock, Etc. My email jimtoclient@yahoo.com, 562-622-4753, 12104 Smallwood Ave, Downey, Ca 90242.

    • Jim,
Do you remember Story, Woods and Churchill–all drivers for battalion officers?
And Bill Maurer the battalion mail clerk? I worked in S-3 for Major Aston, Captain Smith, and SFC Cardoza. I am Darrel Davis–almost 6’6″ tall. I replaced a guy named Hadley. Loftin was the SGT Major’s clerk. Wasn’t CWO Butterfield in charge of the Motor Pool at one time? How about Whitsel and Murphy in Personnel?

  16. I was stationed in Hanau at the Francois Kaserne from March 1965 to February 1966.
The organization at that time was the 4th Howitzer BN, 18th Artillery. The CO was Lt Col LLoyd A Corkan. He had published something about the possible invasion thru the Fulda gap or something of that nature.I was in Message Center (part of S2) which handled crypto information, now obsolete. I do have pictures of the redleg dining hall, motor pool, headquarters and a few other buildings which cannot be identified because i forgot the names. I sailed to Germany on the Maurice M Rose, a troop carrying ship. The Atlantic Ocean was very rough in the Winter. Sincerely Paul
