HE ALSO BUILT AN AIRPLANE IN THE CRAFT SHOP ON THE 2ND FLOOR. HE WORKED ON FLIGHT LINE AS A HELICOPTER MECHANIC. I’VE BUILT FIVE HOME BUILT AIRCRAFT MYSELF AND HAVE FLOWN MORE THAN 2400 HOURS SINCE THEN. WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU.———–RON

  4. I was stationed there in 79-81 with 205 th trans and to all the base got closed down what a shame at was too. I had some good times there as you can see from my E-mail add I transfer to the USMC.

  5. I was there as mechanic on the L-19′s we had in ’55. We were attached to the 20th Field Artillery Btn. Head pilot was Capt. Fitzgerald, and second pilot was Lt. Magnum. Great guys and where my flying days really got started. I have a few pictures taken there, and will submit if somebody sends an e-mail to return them on. This was in 1955.
Before I rotated back to the states, we got an L-20 and we all went on a joy ride one night to try it out. Some great days at Hanau Airfield.

  6. Was there Jan 1986 thru July 1989. HHC CMBT AVN BDE in the Motor Pool. Was a fantastic tour and great place to spend in the military. I have seen pictures of the place today and it is such a same to see it so desalet and forgotten. I will never forget. Would love to go back and do it all over again.

  7. As a former 173rd “ROBINHOOD” from 1976 to 1977, I stood at the gate shown in the picture above as a security guard instead of suffering the results of a harsher article 13. It takes all kinds of us to make a helicopter unit great.

  8. I was stationed at Fliegerhorst from Feb 76 until Jul 78. I was a crew chief on U-21 and C-12 fixed wing aircraft, flying the CG of V Corps all over Germany and Europe.

In 1977, the 62nd was redesignated as the 503rd CAB, and I was attached to the 205th Transportation Bn. as the 62nd was reassigned to Rose AAF outside Frankfurt.

I played basketball and softball on the 62nd’s teams. I also was the CO’s driver (Maj. MacGlothlin), and for a brief while was the company postal clerk.

Some names I remember are Joe Fox, Bill Williams, Jimmie Johnson, Russ Hart, Fred Mills, Russ Glover, Aaron Tilseth, Jerry Kennedy, Steve Stockmeier, Nelson Linscott, Wayne King, Tony Felice, Hoyt Pendely, Steve Gonseth, Tom Siano.

Great times traveling all over Germany, and flying all over northern Europe.

Hope to hear from any old friends that stop by here!

  9. I was there in 55 57 and loved everything about the country. Anybody out there from my time? Nystrom, Wallace, Mac, M/SGT Kuhn???????/?

  10. huey crewchief, 173rd assault helicopter co. (ROBINHOODS) 73-74, 130th engineer brigade aviation det. 72-73.

    • I was an huey airframe mechanic from 1976 to 1977 for the ‘ROBINHOODS’ of the 173rd. Did you ever learn about the secret tunnels from Fleigerhorst to Hanau for Nazi planes during WW II? Also, you should look up the history of Bad Tolz NCO academy. I graduated from there in 1977 before we lost boys while trying to recover hostages in the middle east.

    • I went to Bad Tolz academy also. Did not know about tunnels. Good to hear from You Robinhood!

  11. I got the chills looking at the front gate. Was stationed there from 1964 – 1967. HQ/A Co. 122nd Maintenance, We did 4th echelon radio repair. The repair shop was down by the air field. my email address is hgbeck@aol.com if anyone wants to email me.

    • I was there at the same time, Sgt. Seitz was the platoon leader, he later became a Warrant Officer and went to the 143rd Sig.Bn.

  12. Hello all! I was at Fleigerhorst from 1984-1990. My career counseler had to drag me away! I was in HHS, then C Battery. FDC. What times we had. A few names I remember…SSG Dail commo SGT Zelco survey CPT Lodwick C btry Commander, SFC Jo Trad C Btry fire platoon, SFC Bonner HQ FDC. CPT Maddox HQ Commander, I was FDC in HQ and C Btry also Battalion career counseler. Retired in 2000 here at Fort Bragg as a 1SG. Drop me a line if you knew me. We worked hard and played hard.

  13. I was stationed there back in 87 to 90. Man, spending my 18 to 21 youth there was a dream…Lived like a Roman soldier. Partied a little, not to much. SHOPPED there ALOT..! Never had a better time. Ta think we were under a constant nuclear threat. Really didn’t occur to most of us in its actual reality. Did me though. Good Lord it did..! The dreams I had. Both asleep and awake. Must have thankfully been another Earths reality leaking into our own…Wandered through the Holocaust camps…Cried my way through…Still, never had a better time…T’was my youth perhaps…

  14. Hi , do you remember Frank A. Wallace stationed here from about 86 til 88?

  15. My (then) husband was stationed at Fliegerhorst Kaserne from 1978 – 1980. We lived at Martin’s Apartments nearby. We met several very delightful families during our stay there. Please reply if you lived in or around Martin’s Apartments at that time.

  18. Wow the front gate, man it was hell getting a tractor trailer through there. I was there 73-75 3RD/AD 122nd maint. Not a bad place to be stationed, kinda central to all Europe. Love to hear from some of the guys that were there then.

    • Was there from 68 to 71 with H/A 122MT BN. I made many, many trips through that gate with a 5 ton tractor-trailor, and don’t remember having any trouble with it.

  19. Know airbase, as my home !

  20. My family lived there from 1965-66. My step-father was Lt. Rufus Leggett. I was good friends with a girl named Erika Gossett. I’d love to hear from you if you’re out there.
