Stationed here from ’84-’87 as an 05H with the 409th ASA Co., 502nd ASA Bn., through its transition to Charlie Company, 204th MI Battalion. Did a two-month TDY at FSA to get a feel for non-tactical code-copying and additional time for a hearability study. Served with the absolute best soldiers/people and thoroughly enjoyed my time in the FRG and especially Augsburg. Still in touch with many friends from the era and hope to return one summer soon…
I was stationed with the Calibration Repair Support Center at Flak in Augsburg, ’77-’78. Calibration Specialist. Did most of my work on the Stuttgart calibration team. Head out @ O-dark early Monday mornings and come back in when traffic allowed on Friday nights. I enjoyed my time in Germany and in Augsburg.
I was stationed on Flak for three separate tours. (1) I was an original member of the 321st ASA Company, 507th ASA Gp when the 319th ASA Bn moved down from Kassel in the summer of 1971 and became the 321st ASA Company (same time that FS Augsburg opened). (2) I was initially assigned to the 201st ASA Co with duty in Frankfurt as OIC of Detachment G supporting 3rd Armored Division in Oct 1979. Then moved down to Augsburg as XO/Opns Officer and then Commander of the 409th ASA Co, 502nd ASA Bn from Nov 1980 through Dec 1982. (3) I was then the 204th MI Bn S3 from Jan 1987 through Jun 1989 when I transferred out to FS Augsburg as Bn XO for 3rd Ops Battalion until Jun 1990.
My wife, Maggie O’Connell, was an interrogator with the 511th MI Bn and stationed at Flak. Later she was sent to a Border Resident Office on the inner German border.
