It seems that I posted a question a few months ago concerning the location of he Funker and the Bacelaere Kaserne. I was stationed in the Index Kaserne with the 585th Ord (MAM) Co. in 1949/1950 and I have never heard of those Kasernes. I was aware of an Ordnance rebuild unit located above Esslinger. Can someone help?
The US companies stationed in Index Kaserne = Index Werke moved to Funker Kaserne, Esslingen in 1954. Funker Kaserne was built in 1935 as an extension of Becelaere Kaserne. The whole complex was given back to the “Bundeswehr” in 1956/1957 and closed after the wall came down.
I am hoping to gain insight on Funker Kaserne between 1945 – 1949. I had family members who resided at the camp. Was there documentation of the refugees such as names, date of birth, origins? Where could I locate these documents? I am also attempting to find two soldiers that my family had taken many pictures of … one of the soldier is named David. Appreciate anyone who can help. Thank you!

Hi All – I was stationed at FUNKER KASSERNE from July 1952 – June 1953. I was the Company Clerk and yes, SGT. KANE was my immediate supervisor. I thorougly enjoyed my stay having the ability to travel all over Europe, mostly at government expense. I was raised in Nassau County, NY (the south shore), was drafted in Aug 1951 via the Lynbrook, NY draft board; trained at Ft. Dix. 99% of the guys I trained with went to Korea – few came back,
Would like to hear from anyone.
Hello,
I am Dutch, living in Leiderdorp near Leiden, 40 km south of Amsterdam. I have nothing to do with US army. But I am a VW Beetle freak, and today somebody asked me what a plate on a 1947 VW Beetle could mean saying:
Rebuilt by
Ordnance Automotive center
Esslingen
Us Army Europe
The Beetle is in a showroom of a VW dealership. Maybe you can tell what “Rebuilt” means.
I was at Funker Kaserne in about 76 to 80. The German State Police would rotate on a monthly basis in order to spread the cost of incarceration of the Bader Meinhof gang – pretty dodgy characters in their day – a kind of terrorist Bonny and Clyde!
I spent a lot of time in Esslingen at various Guest houses where I had a pretty good line of credit when there were too many days in the month for the money to last :-} I had the time of my life there and at the Boeblingen Maintenance Facility. Great time, great folks. Miss it . . .
HELLO, DAVID.
IT WAS REALLY INTERESTING TO GET YOUR REPLY ABOUT BEING STATIONED AT THE FUNKER KASERNE.
WAS THERE A VERY PRETTY BRUNETTE LIBRARIAN AT THE BASE LIBRARY ? AND WAS SARGEANT KANE STILL ON DUTY ? AND WAS THERE STILL A BROADCAST FROM MUNICH EVERYDAY AT NOON CALLED “LUNCHEN IN MUNCHEN” ?
I WAS RAISED IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND WENT TO WORK IN NEW YORK CITY IN THE ADVERTISING BUSINESS IN 1956. AND I’M STILL HERE LIVING IN EASTERN LONG ISLAND IN AN AREA KNOWN AS ‘THE HAMPTONS’ . RETIRED OF COURSE.
Hi Hector
Yes, there was a knockout brunette librarian there at the same time I was there. I used to go to the library just to check her out. She was amazing. Everybody in the company was smitten with her. I don’t remember a Sgt, Kane or that program “Lunchen in Munchen” you mentioned. But I sure remember the librarian. Dave Stalker
Hi Hector
I was stationed in Esslingen, first Index Kaserne, from April 54 to June 54, then Funker Kaserne from June 54 to Feb. 55 when I was rotated back to the US. and discharged.
I enjoyed the time there, especially the frauleins and the beer. How about you? Dave
I noticed you do not list Funker Kaserne in Esslingen – Unless Becelaere is it renamed.
The German police shared the barracks in order to guard the Bader Meinhof gang at the local prison. They would rotate state police monthly I believe in order to spread the costs.

I WAS STATIONED AT THE FUNKER KASERNE IN 1952. BETWEEN JUNE AND NOVEMBER. I BELIEVE A RULE WAS PUT IN PLACE THAT DISALLOWED DEPLOYMENTS OF SUCH SHORT DURATION AFTER MY OWN DEPLOYMENT.
I HAD TRAINED AT CAMP ROBERTS, CA AND FULLY EXPECTED TRANSFER TO KOREA. MY DUTIES AT THE FUNKER KASERNE DELT WITH CREATING ROAD MAPS OF THE REGION. I DON’T KNOW HOW THE MAPS WERE USED BUT I DIDN’T ASK QUESTIONS.
I ENJOYED MY GERMAN DUTY VERY MUCH. MANY OF MY FELLOW SOLDIERS WERE VERY UNHAPPY BEING AWAY FROM HOME. I LOVED IT AND KEPT MY MOUTH SHUT SO AS NOT TO BE JEERED FOR LIKING THE DUTY.
MY ONLY, AND CONSIDERABLE DISCOMFORT, CAME FROM HAVING TO CONDUCT SHORT ORDER DRILL. I WAS LOUSY AT IT. I SOUNDED LIKE A GIRL. DURING GAMES I WAS THE LAST TO BE CHOSEN FOR A SIDE. I FELT LIKE AND LOOKED LIKE WOODY ALLEN.
BUT I TOOK ALL THE LEAVE TIME I COULD AND TRAVELED AS MUCH AS TIME ALLOWED. THAT WAS GREAT.
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THE EXPERIENCES OF STEPHAN KASSNER ARE IN REGARD TO THE FUNKER KASSERNE
