I played in the Band and then transferred to the 7th Army Band in Stuttgart. Col Arnold was our CO. Do any of these names ring a bell? Harry Knight, Bruce Cook, “Moo” Olejar, Dick Crissey, Lt O’Callahan? I think I remember a guy named “Moose” also. Would be great to hear from you! – “Appy”

    • I was at the Babbenhausen Kasserne March of 69 till the 5/77 moved to Camp Peri, and I went with the unit.
When I was first there, I spent three days in HHB and was billited in “the triple nickle”. then I was assigned to B Btry, and went with them to Crete to fire the missile.

  9. good old babenhausen did my time from jan 1975 until oct 1976 hhb 2/83 fa our mess hall was call the dragan inn muris was my place for drinking. when back on vacation in feb 1999 and was abel to go in it was not the same after 23 years when back again on vacations on feb 2008 the kaserne was close. realy sad to see the old post close.

  10. Was a medic in HHB 2/5 FA Nov 76 til Apr 77 when the gods smiled upon me and transfered my butt to the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt. 97th was a great assignmentThe medics formed a joint unit dispensary (medics from all the units; 2/5, 2/83, B-TAB, etc, worked together on a daily basis to provide basic sick call and after hours coverage under the supervision of a MD and a PA). Tony Macky and Gilbert Jones are the two medics I remember best from that time. Other person that stood out was the HHB CO. He was missing a forearm. I was told that was from a direct fire exercise that went bad. Nicknamed Capt Hook, he and the 1st Dgt were both decent leaders.

  11. I “gyroed” with the 597th AFA from Ft.Sill and hit Bremerhauven in July 57′. On the train ride down to Babenhausen, we changed unit designations and became part of the 267th AFA already stationed there at the kaserne. I was a wheel & track mechanic and for the next few weeks we fixed stuff before heading for a month to Graf. Worked on them old M44 open topped 155′s and 135 & 211 duce & halves to keep the wheels on the road. The 267th folded its colors on 1 December 57′ and I got shipped across the river to ABurg to the 1st Obsn.Bn. ,A Battery, and retrained as a Sr. Draftsman Plotter and part time FO.. Lots of classes in trig and math to run those old GR-8 plotting sets.Been back to Germany twice and visited both Babenhausen and Fiori Barracks. Last time was some 10 years ago and Fiori is full of eastern Med civilians, but Babenhausen was still in Army control. Seen other posts where the post is no longer in US hands.

  12. There is considerable data on the Babenhausen Kaserne and many of the Veterans who served there at web sites:

  13. I have fond memories of both the military and civilian sides of Babenhausen circa 1970. Regretfully, I did not record those in pictures. Always intended on getting back there someday . . . and now it’s too late, save for the civilian side. Spent many an hour in the “Tradewinds”, whiling away the hours drinking “flippies” and eating french fries. (Still trying to remember the name of the long-time waitress there. At least one blogger, brought back the name of the “gesthaus” across the street from the entrance (I think). The “Bambi Lounge”?)

Working in the HHB 36th ComCenter, for SFC Shadoan, I had what was considered
the “primo” gig on the post. With a Top Secret NATO clearance, I was basically locked up in the ComCenter, and escaped virtuallly every “alert” there was–and–had the pleasure of driving the daily Darmstadt/Frankfurt/Aberg/Heidelberg courier run. It was basically a sight-seeing tour. Can remember the (was it “SMLM”) Soviets watching me–from atop the roof of their car in the adjacent field–destroy radio codes in the “burn barrel.”

Does anyone remember “Bert the Tailor”, who had a shop (the size of a closet) on the first floor of the HHB?

Still . . . wish my memory was better. Perhaps someone out there will help it along.

    Regards to All!

    • Hi Ed,
I was in Commo at HHB 36th Gp. also. See reply to Joe Selby below. A spec5 with the last name being “Schutte”, I believe, pronounced “Skut” did your job there in the CommCenter. I think he left near the same time I did. My work place on post was the next floor up in the same building in an area smaller than “Bert’s” tailor shop! I was a radio operator. Often our 26D rig was sitting between the CommCenter building and the Admin building, also. Yes as indicated, I knew Bert the tailor. He did my laundry regularly. Plus he sold me a “German style” sport jacket that I wore often while there, and had it for years after returning to The States.

Some obvious changes occurred there after I left. The gasthaus across the street from the gate was called “Astoria Bar” when I was there. I also have a picture of it which says “Alcatraz” on the front. I took the pic from the internet somewhere. When I was there, “Tradewinds” was merely referred to as “the EM club”.

My room in the barracks was on 2nd floor with the window situated over the rear mess hall door/roof looking out toward the schwimmbad. If you will leave an email address I will send you some pics that were taken by another GI whom I knew there, but only regained contact with him in 2006 or 2007?

    • Chet,
Apparently it IS a small world . . . your post served to trigger my memory. I, TOO, bought a “german-style” jacket from Bert the Tailor! Seems like I remember now that whenever you dropped off/picked up laundry, he would be trying to unload something. . . . and the gasthaus across from the front gate . . . “Astoria” rings a bell–but I did most of my imbibing at the EM Club and now I’m thinking Trudy was the waitress. We really “ran her ragged”. Wonderful woman.

I can recall being passed out on the floor of the “Code Room” in the CommCenter the morning after a real bender and also denying entry to LTC Cronin (didn’t have the right clearance). Guess I’ve got to look thru the attic, I’m sure I’ve got just a few photos there somewhere. esbrittonjr@hotmail.com

  14. i was in babenhausen fom1988-1992 I’m looking for old budies

  15. Babenhausen was my first duty station in Germany – with the 2ndBn 5thArty from Jan to Jun 1963 before I was transferred to HQ V Corps in Frankfurt. Battalion CO at that time was an African-American, LTC Roscoe C. Cartwright (he was a true “Red Leg” artilleryman because he wore red socks with his combat boots). He made Brigadier General during the Vietnam War and later served as Deputy Chief of Resource Management (i.e., Comptroller) at HQ, USAREUR. He and his wife were killed in Dec. 1974 in a commercial airplane crash approaching Washington, D.C.

    • Hi Joe I was there from August ’62 until late ’64 or early ’65 at HHQ 36th Arty GP. Then I went to Aschaffenburg and joined the 1st TAB 26th Arty at Fiori Barracks. I knew several guys from 2nd/5th. One guy by the name of “Rip” VanWinkle was at the gasthaus by the schwimmbad on a regular basis was from 2nd/5th. He was tight with “Gertie”. I do not remember the name of the gasthaus. I also knew the guys in the band that played at the Glasshaus for quite some time. Do not remember their names. I think they were all from 2nd/5th.

  16. My first duty station in Germany was with the 2nd Battaltion 5th Artillery at Babenhausen from January to June 1963, before transferring to HQ, V Corps in Frankfurt.

  17. I was in Babenhausen from 86 to 89. I spent alot of time in the field. Even still, I had a great time while I was stationed there. I would go back tomorrow. Tough firld trips but great times.

    • I was stationed in 88. I was looking for a bank facility which was American Express. It changed to something else and was wondering if anyone could help me with any info, phone number, address, etc. Any little bit of help is appreciated. Thank you.
