    • Co. B hits a soft spot with me since I lived and worked in the same building as the tankers; that is, the old location next to Kiwi College where it was pre-JFK bushwhack. Wasn’t much room when 3rd Arty came up to Ayers the first time in Oct. of ’61 so our S-4 and TA/21Room located by the back door of Co. B. Good deal for me as I lived alone for 18 mo’s over there; wow, had a lot of freedom for being in the Army! Good tanker friend, Sp4 Phil Murray, killed in jeep accident while rear detachment, waiting to rotate home, Summer Graf of ’63. Memories, young full of piss and vinegar and no such thing as old!

  2. I was in Hq Hq battery 2/3 Arty in 68& 69.I was a cook, just wanted to say hi to anyone who was there.Really had a good time just didn’t like those damn alerts.but everything else was really fun ( didn’t think it at the time ).Anyhow just wanted to say Hi!!!!

    • Carson, Usually say hello to anyone from our outfit that was there in the ’60′s. Myself, 62-64, S-4 Clk, Svc Btry. In contact with a Bruce Wessel, A Btry, there about your time, don’t know if you know him or not. Until Oct of ’63 Svc Btry had the top floor of Hqs building before taking over top of A Btry. Hope you found some old drinking buddies, takes a good while sometimes. Prosit, BobL

  3. I was with CSC 2/32 (Redeye Section) from Dec 77 – Aug 80, 1SG’s name was Jackson.

  4. At the rock 1964-67 often wonder whatever happened to all the guys.Didnt know about all those racial problems of the 70s seems hard to believe but everyone seemed to get along back then, sure there were a few troublemakers on both sides but generally there wern,t many problems, number one concern, getting back to the world.

  5. Brian G. Edgar are great initials, I left out I was in ACO 3/36TH INFANTRY, I look back on my time there as a growing experience because I had just turned 18years old. i arrived back in Mo. still 20 years old. The Rock has left a lifelong impression.I believe from the message board that it has a lot of Americas young men and women.

  6. i was in 3rd arty kirch gons 60 63

    • Jim, Which battery were you in? I was in Svc Btry from 62-64. S-4 Section, worked as clerk and took care of TA/21 for the battalion. Long time ago! You must have come up from the Schloss? I replaced a guy named “Rooms”.

  7. Dave Smith….stationed at Kirch Goens from Feb 1966 – Sept 1967. I was in HHC 2/32. Looking for buddies of mine that were there at the time.

    • Good luck Dave, Found all my old drinking buddies but it took two years and without this machine never would have happened. Two dead over there and the rest scattered around the country here. Facebook is a good place to start since we’re all getting older and want to gab a good deal.
At KG Feb ’62 until Oct ’64 and the last day of my enlistment; discharged at Frankfurt and hit the Strasse for a few months. Knew I’d never get back and heard it’s not the same country nowadays. Speedy4 Bob LaMascus, S-4 Clk, Two-Thirds Arty (whomever thought that up I like!).

    • two thirds artillery and one third___________.

I was with CSC 2/32 (Redeye Section) from 77 – 80. Was your commander a black guy with buck teeth?

  10. Ayres Kaserne – November 28, 1975 until July 8, 1979. A Co, 2 Bn, 33 Armor. (Tigers)
    Lived in Butzbach Housing.
My first memory is after moving out of the barracks and into housing without a car we would stand at the exit of housing to get a ride to Kirch-Goens. My Platoon Sargent looked at me standing there and made that left turn without stopping. Will always remember SSG Marshall J Rountree.
CO was Capt. Wilcox, PLTLDR was 2LT Byrd.
SSG Shiel was my Tank Commander.
In 1978 we had a change of leadership in A Co. PLTSGT was Karsten Dittmer. A crazy guy when we were in the field. See the pictures on Facebook. I was assigned to M60 MBT A12 and cannot believe that I left there as a SSG.

  11. Hello, I am looking for my biological father. His name is Jesse Martinez and he served with the 2nd Battalion 6th Infantry in Kirch-Goens around 1964/65 to 1966/67. He was originally from Mexico and served with the US Army. I was born in Giessen April 1966 and my mother’s name was Renate. If anyone knows of him I would appreciate any info. Thank you. Petra

  12. was at the rock from 65-68 c/2/33 armor. friends included don pullen(who hooked up with me and my wife at gatlinburgh tenn. august 2000. ) jim langley , bob hester . shot dead by his wife in boone nc. danny elmore . phil jenkins (met at atlantic city casino). tom nagle. ken pearson . and a lot of others i can’t remember. what i learned there about tanking carried me 16 more years in the guard and reserve. i had so much fun in that unit !

  13. Ha spelled my last name wrong.
    It is Doss

  14. I got there in May 1964 and left in December 1966. I started out driving the XO of Brigade Hq.Then went into the commo section of Brigade Hq.and even tho that was my M.O.S. I found that boring so I got this bright idea to transfer across the street to 3rd Bn. 36Th .infantry.I stayed there till I rotated. I never got busted but i didn’t make it above PFC, Guess i liked that German beer too much as I was only 17 years old at the time I got there.
My basic and A.I.T. was at Fort Polk, La.
Believe it or not I actually like it at The Rock. I went to Giessen all the time mostly to the Astoria Bar and the Express Halle.

  15. In true military fashion, I was trained in infantry at Fort Ord, California, assigned to the 3rd Bn 36th Infantry, then at Division HQ they reassigned me to the 2nd Bn 3rd Arty. I told them I knew nothing of artillery, but they just said, “They need bodies”, so that’s where I went. Thanks to good test scores in Basic Training and the ability to type, I was asked if I wanted to work at Battalion HQ. Well…yeah!
So there you have it, from grunt to Remington Raider / battalion photographer / major’s (Clinton H. Gillmore) driver from May 1968 to September 1969. In August 1969, my CO, LTC Doerflinger asked me to paint a Battlion Sign (we didn’t have one and all the other units did)…while at Graffenwohr. It took me almost three weeks to paint the 3′ x 5′ sign, including the Battalion Crest, on both sides! I wonder what happened to that sign.

My God, it’s just a flood of memories!

Thanks for the opportunity to ramble like this. Great site!

    • I got there in April 1970.Gilmore was still there. We called him the Funf (German for five, the bumper number for the XO).Doerflinger had just left and the CO was LTC Barker.Wasn’t the PSNCO named Swegler?

    • Henry, Best friend in Hqs Btry name of Henry called Hank; died in an auto accident coming back from Marburg one night. GT Score and typing changed my MOS immediately upon landing at 2/3FA in Feb of ’62. Guy I was to replace waiting on me up in Svc Btry and hauled me over to the Personnel Section (UAC) and had my MOS changed to supply. So there I am, S-4 Clerk for the battalion and it was very sweet duty with a lot of freedom to come and go off post; in general, had it made for 31 mo’s and some days. Passed up Kiwi College, which was just next door to us on Ayers, so I could keep my job and I wasn’t planning to stay in the Army; started to get burned out that last year.

  16. I was Bn. Mail Clerk for 2ndMTB 1st Cav, from Nov.1959, till Feb. 1962. Ayers was not known as the rock at that time. We just referred to it as ” KG”.

    • Jerry, I was coming in the gate as you were leaving in Feb of ’62; so damned last century isn’t it? You’re right it was just KG or Ayers in our day. You saw my outfit, 2/3FA, dribble in to KG from the Schloss in about Oct of ’61; guys were still crying about leaving the Butzbach and being extended to ETS when I got there in February. Hell, I was new with about a thousand days to go so I was just excited to be in Europe and the hell away from Oklahoma! Some other sayings we never used: Red Legs, Gunners, Two-Thirds Arty. Met several outstanding officers and NCO’s but not many; put up with a lot of stupidity at times. Jeez, beautiful country and 4 DMarks plus to the Dollar…life was good!

  17. I was at the rock from 79 to 82. HHC 2/33 armor. Anyone remember 1sg Trent?

    • Don, That HHC building was Co. B, 2/33AR until JFK got hit. Battalions all used to have UAC Section, Personnel really, put Division pulled all UAC’s to Frankfurt in Oct of ’63. Their leaving, created some much needed room and things got moved around and pulled together. Myself, having lived for 1 1/2 years at Co.B left me living back in the section room; but, living alone for that length of time was sweet. Tankers wanted the space Arty was using for our S-4 Office and TA/21 Room. Biggest build up of troops per JFK so Ayers was crowded, used every room that was empty. Two-Thirds had left the barracks next door to 2/33AR in the early 70′s and returned, again, to the Schloss. What was in those buildings close to the PX Annex in your day?

    • Name seems familiar, which section were you in? I was in Bn. Medical section ’79-’82, do you remember SFC Noel (med plt sgt)? Thanks for mentioning Tops name, I do remember him, do you remember Cpt. James Davis was the C.O. Do you have contact with anyone else from then? Particularly looking for Jeff Phillips, Gary Sandvig, Brett Kammeier, Scott Kidwell, Ken Roberts, “Skip” Hambrook. Any of these ring a bell? TIGERS FOREVER!!

  18. I was stationed at Ayers Kaserne from February 1970 thru August 1971, I was in B Co. 3/36th Infantry.

  19. I was a Sgt E-5 with A Co 2/32d Armor ( Smokebringers ) at Ayers, from 1974 till 1977. Was a 44k20, but after VN, we all were reassigned to different post and at Ft Riley, i was asked if I wanted to walk or ride a tank , so I ended up in Armor, First year I was on the gate as a Unit Policeman ( secondary MOS 95 B ) Shot Top Gun of USAEUR twice in a row (top score over all) and they would not promote me, so i got out ….Have fond memories of the “Rock” !

  20. My Name is Dennis Smith. I was with HHC 2/32 Armor at Kirch-Goens from 1979-1981. We had a truck accident and one man was killed. I have a head injury and cannot think of the name. Does anyone know about this? The brakes failed on a truck we were riding in.

    Thanks

    Dennis Smith HHC 2/32 Armor
