I was at AK from 82 to 84 in Delta Battery. Looking for Bernice Lopez, James “Woody” Woods, Marc Mercer, Pete Duffey, Edger Brown, all from commo platoon and Riley from one of the firing platoons. Eric Dougherty Tony Graves is looking for you. I am still in contact with Tony Graves and Earl “Moonbeam” Phillips from commo platoon at that time.
I was in headquarters 3/84 from 82 to 84. I never could figure out the folks that never left and counted days. I would always say “This is the world”. Some got it and some did not. Altstadt was always a good time for me.
I remember your name, but can’t place the face– I got to AK in Sept. ’82, and was in the Security Platoon with SFC Enyart as the platoon sergeant and SGT Mandeville as my squad leader. When they phased out Security Platoon I went to Special Weapons Section in Ammo Platoon under SSG Baumgaertel. Left in June ’84 to go to the 1st Division at Cooke Barracks in Goeppingen.
Was stationed from 4/73 to 11/74 at the kaserne in Neckarsulm. 3/84th FA. Remember the Kluss beer. The best. Also the schnetzel from the small guesthaus across the street. Was in D battery. Major Bruce in command.
Am correcting DOS to 57′ to 58′. We moved the whole battalion to Nuremberg in early 58′. Locals were not happy to see us because we made Nuremberg a nuclear target since the 39th was an atomic cannon outfit, using tractor driven 280 mm guns. As I recall, I believe some locals laid in the road in an attempt to stop the convoy from entering the city. Used to hang out in the Hillbilly Gasthouse near the walled city and the Bahnhof, which had great wursts on klinebroten. On the way pass the walled city we used harass the hookers in the open windows and they would try and dump buckets of piss on us. Great memories that I haven’t thought about in a hundred years. I remember Sundays at the big beer garden near Grosse Lac, it was awesome. Damn, wish I could relive those years-I loved it.
I was stationed at AK in ’58-59 with 3rd Gun Battalion,39th Artillery in the air wing. Lived in Hq. Barracks. Can’t believe this site exists! Col. Bagley was CO, I can still see his drivers face but can’t remember his name. 39th was a 280 mm cannon outfit that fired a short range tactical nuclear round. I remember the gasthouse outside the base, nice people-great schnitzel sandwiches. Great duty in the late 50′s.what memories-this is killing me,gotta sign off.
I was stationed at Neckarsulm in “58. My wife was with me, lived in the first two-story house just outside front gate. Was Sgt Major Hughes clerk. Col. Bagley was out leader also. Then went to Nuremberg, lived downtown, had a ’52 Pontiac. We both loved this part of our lives and hope to go back someday.
Sorry to here that the kaserne is no more. I was stationed there from 1976 to 78. Was in headquarters battery. Was the training Sargent there for 1 1/2 years. MOS was a 73 echo but never did anything in it. I wanted to visit the place again because I really liked the area. I can’t really remember to many names now. But would love to here from anyone that remembers me.
I got to AK in May of ’81 (SVC Battery) and was there when we became C Co. 55th Maint. Bn. I left in Aug 83. Worked in maintenance for Pershing Power Station with Gonzo, Swink. SFC Thomas & CW? Hama. Love to hear from folks. Some of the greatest times ever.
Arrived in Neckarsulm 333 Arty Kaserne in Nov 63, Kennedy was shot about a week later. Bought a Vw from SGT Vitner he bought a Porshe 911 (63) shipped it to US and found out he killed himself in it a few months later. Worked in the motor pool under SFC Brank, With the demise of the Pershing was reassigned to 124th Ord at Nellingen Barracks the following year. Made my skeeter wings in Neckersulm. Anyone Remember PFC Peter Weiden?
I was stationed @ Arty Kas. from early 1962 to late 1964. Pete Wieden @ I met at a German orientation class for new arrivals, became friends and remaned in touch with each other until his death in 2010. Pete and his lovely wife Uschi (Ursula) had two children, Tina and Danny. Uschi and Danny live in the Dallas area and Tina lives in Oklahoma. Some of my friends were named Ortiz, Tom Crawford, Rueben Sibley. I often think of SFC Robert P. Bethea who was on of the most professional soldiers I have ever met. Would like to hear from others who were stationed with the 46th Arty Grp or the 333rd Fld Arty grp.I was with A Battery. The following is a list of a few I served with. Ray Murphy,Allen Dillingham, Ed Towe.Don WorthenTom Drury, Ken Mang. Ed Conrad,Parrot and Berger, Roland Stodola, Claude Brown
This was my first assignment in Germany in Aug 1946 with the 16th Ord Maint Co.
Only 1 barracks was standing and usable. and the building next to it next to it was only partly usable which was used for a laundry and tailor shop as I remember.
Subsequently the 16th was moved to Munich (Will Kaserne) and changed to
533rd Ord Tk Mint Co.
I was stationed at Artillery Kaserne with SVC BTRY 3/84th from Sep 1973 to Dec 1976 as a SSG. Also stationed at Badenerhof Kaserne with B Btry, 3/84th as a CW2 from May 1980 to summer 1981. Then with C Co, 55th Maint at Redleg and Artillery Kaserne from 1981 to Apr 1983 as CW2/3. Many memories.
I was in Svc Btry 3/84 in commo section from 11/74 thru winter 76. Do you remember anyone from Commo Section. Such as Roberto Cortez, Texas. Flander. (Chicago ?) Smily (Puerto Rico ) Kevin O’Donnel ( New Jersey) Did you ever go to Rose Gasthaus in Bingweg (?) it was about 4 “klick” up the road from Artillery Kaserne.
I was in Svc Btry 3/84 in Supply/Stock Control, we were in the Computer trailers that were set up in the motor pool from 12/72 to 6/75, I remember Smily from Puerto Rico, he had a buddy from Puerto Rico name Lopez who was a cook. I remember the mountain with the cross and the NCO club in the middle of the Kaserne, the cafeteria in the front middle of the Kaserne. Do you remember the movie theatre was at the back of the Kaserne passed the motor pool.
I was stationed at AK from 2/70 thru 2/73, assigned to D Btry. Served as a Platoon Leader (1st Platoon), Executive Officer and RSO. We went to Green River in April 1971 to fire 4 missiles.
I remember my time with Pershing and am proud to have been given the task. Would like to hear from anyone else.
I was at AK from11/70-10/71 was in commo platoon. My name is andy williamson they used to call me pee wee for a nick name. Major Noble was the BC , SFC Jackson platoon leader. I also went to Green River. I am trying to look for Spc 4 Aaron James Jr., Spc 4 Terry Pugh both are from Tenn. Spc 4 Doug Fisher from Ohio, Spc 4 Pat Mupphy from Miss.Just wondering if you remember any of them? I also would be interested if you have old pictures of AK.
Hey Phillip,
Answer to your question from Dennis Blackburn. I was there from the summer of 1973 to winter of 1975. About 10 years difference. I was 15E10 but never did that job. I was in the Service Battery serving in the Security and Ammo Platoons. Hope you find some guys that you know.

Hey Bill Boatman, I remember you. We didn’t run with the same crowd but I’m pretty sure I used to pick up my mail down the hall where you worked. 1st fl HQ Battery. I was a medic under the mean old SSgt Anthony. I remember Top Sgt Greene, Capt. Gray the whole bunch. Mostly I hung out with the 11B’s from Svc Bttry. I believe 1 of my roomates, girl named Peaches knew U. Also PFC. Scott too. This was back in 79-80. I had lots of good memories from that time, a few bad ones too. My crew did way too much partying for our own good. I hope life has been good to U. I can recall U where a good lookin dude. U had those ‘all American Kennedy’ type looks going on. Funny, the things we remember. I hope some others from back then check in too. Take care…Debi Stanley
I will be going back to germany for the first time in 30 years.
does anyone know if the Artillery Kaserne still stands. Im going to take pictures
also what of WHarton Barracks?
Sorry to inform you that only a couple buildings from Artillery Kaserne is still standing. It is now a refugee camp for Iranians. They are very suspicious of anyone with a camera. You cannot go inside to look around. On the bright side Neckarsulm is still a great place to vacation. Main street is now a Plaza with restaurants and outdoor seating. No traffic. The German women are still pleasant and as good looking as ever!!!!
Hi Glen,
There is nothing left of Wharton Barracks that I can tell. From an online picture, looks like a shopping mall or something like that where Wharton used to be. Was stationed there from 66-68.
I served at 3/84 FA in both NSU and Heilbronn in the early 1970s. My family and I returned about five years ago; only the Headquarters building in Neckarsulm and several ground pads remained. The remainder was razed. The HQ building is now low income housing, and you can drive up to it, although none of the older ambiance remains. The cross-strasse valley storage base facility is also gone, now suburban housing. I tried to drive up to the hilltop cross, but most of the older vineyard is gone, too. One remaining fixture is the Gasthaus, located across the road from the main gate. We had lunch there, spoke with the owner.
We visited with friends outside town. There are a number of local places to stay, although we chose to stay at Bad Wimfpen.
There are many regional changes, including farmland now developed into commuter housing, and small retail business strips. The former auto manufacturing (NSU, Fiat, etc) sites from the 1960-70s are now owned by Audi, which has built a modern complex in Neckarsulm along the autobahn and seems to have taken over the industrial base. And, the river valley is dominated by a new, neuclear smoke stack.
I also drove into Heilbronn, seeking Wharton. The city is much changed with in-fill and new, multi-use retail/housing/commercial construction throughout. Wharton was completely gone, and I found it difficult to orient myself, although the Banhof and a few other major buildings remain.
Hi guys,
my name is Stefan, I´m German and I live around the corner where the AK was standing.
I´m sorry to inform you all the US facilities are gone. They broke down the buildings in Neckarsulm and Heilbronn.
Now in Neckarsulm on the area of the former AK we have now big office biuldings of several companies.
I also miss the AK, because I had very good friends there, like Robert King and Gary Horsey.
I fly next week to spain, but if anybody need any information about Neckarsulm you can rech me under steve67@gmx.net .
Best regards from Neckarsulm/Germany
