  2. Was stationed there from 60-62 and am going to Germany in a month. Looking at the pictures of the base I don’t recognize hardly a thing. I am still going to go by it and maybe stop in a Gasthaus if they are still there.
Go to http://www.freewebs.com/raybice and check the site out if you want to see what it was like in the old days.

    • Hello Pops,

yes in the 60s and in the70s the base was much smaller, in the 80s the Anderson Barracks had a big construction project because of the Patriot Rocket´s , during the “Dessert Strom” the Patriots where move to Kuwait and to Israel.

During the cold war times in the 80s 4000 soldiers where stationed in Dexheim, the Army has build at this time 2 housing areas outside the base in Nierstein and in Undenheim.

    • I was stationed at Dexheim 1988 to 1991. There were not 4000 troops at Dexheim. 12th Engineers had about 1200 troops and patriots up on the hill had about the same. Those were the only two units at Dexheim during that time. Almost all of us went to the middle east during desert storm, however, Echo Co. 12 Engr BN stayed behind because they were strictly a bridging company and there was a skeleton crew left of the patriot missle bn on the hill. The housing area was technically offbase but was right outside the back gate by the motorpool and was a pretty big housing area that probably extended 1/2 mile on the roadfront towar Nierstein. There was no housing in Nierstein or Undenheim. My first year at 12th Engineers I lived off post in Saulheim but I paid rent to a german couple and it was not military housing. If they added housing in towns after 1991 I never heard about it and to best of my knowledge there is still no housing off base.

    • ok, after thinking about it a bit I do remember some sort of housing in nierstein by the railroad tracks but I don’t remember them being official base housing. I will admit that I didn’t know anyone in those buildings so I may be wrong about that. I know there were quite a few military families in those buildings. I never heard anything about housing in Undenheim though.

    • The Nierstein housing was official, perhaps Undenheim not. In Nierstein the german goverment has build 6 blocks down on the railroad, I think the area was empty for a while after “dessert strom” and the contract with the Army was until 2000 but
the army agreed to sell it to investors.
OK regarding the troops I was wrong, you should know it better, thank you for the information.

what do you mean with “housing area was technically offbase” ?
Does it means all the supply like Water Elekticity etc. came form german sources ?

      Cheers

  16. The Anderson Barracks where reclaimed by the german goverment in December 2009,
since January 2010, heating and electricity has been cutted, the complete area is empty It looks a little bit frightening if you see the dark buildings during night time.
The nature is slowly comming back all over the place.
Currently the only inhabitan´s are rabbits, birds, foxes and some wild cats.
As fare as I know the mayor of Nierstein has no plans what to do with the former Military base, even most of the buildings are still in good condition.
I fear the anderson barracks are on the way to be a “lost place” because nobody will take the responsibility.

    • I had the chance to make some pictures through the fence:

    • good pics. have always wanted to take my son there. He is 20 now and was born at the air force hospital in weisbaden. Was planning to take him there next year when he turns 21 but now I guess what’s the use. My base is closed down and the hospital no longer there either. What’s to see? Kind of depressing. Wonder when the put the big ass cover at the front gate and the nice guard house. When I was there we had a little shack for a guard house and took turns standing by the yellow posts. None of that stuff was there. Can’t tell ya how many guard shifts I stood their freezing my butt off…….with no live rounds either heh, heh. Always wondered how exactly we were to stop an intruder………Thanks for the pictures. The one from back of motor pool toward housing area shows the building we lived in when my son was born. The one just to the left of the NCO club from that view. Anyway, sad about it being left to rot.

    • Hello Lee,

from what I heard here in the community they hired a consulting company to make an pre study how to use the Anderson Barracks in furture, I assume the housing on the east side will be converted into “new nierstein” some buildings like the motor pool can be used from Industrial usage or for storage etc.
And of course some buildings will be broken down.
Perhaps someone can use the Partiot Area as well.
But you are rigth, is sad to see the Area roting, and it is going faster from year to year, I noticed recently some
grafiti paintings on the buildings standing directly on the road.

The hospital in Wiesbaden was renovated and the Area is now used for housing, offices, and looks realy nice you should show it to your son.
In Wiesbaden the Army is investing a lot of money, you see a lot of construction going on in Erbenheim since Heidelberg and Darmstadt has been reclaimed by the german goverment.
The german goverment organisation that is running the conversion has still a lot work, recently a big Army Complex has bee shreedert, now there is a big IKEA Store.
The conversion project helps an potential investor with cheap credit money, and if you invest in a housing project
you can claim from 130 Euro to 250 Euro per Square Meter, let´s say you buy an apartment with 80 Square Meter, you will get 10 000 to 20 000 Euro payback.

    • I forgot the front house, it was build after 2006, look in Google Earth the pictures are from 2006, and the house is not on it.
So stupid to do such an investement for a empty Base.

    • Thanks for the update. I was stationed there in 1989-91 with 4/7 ADA…I have great memories of Anderson Barracks, a modern military post in the middle of wine country…good times!

    • Hello David

yes Dexheim is in a nice landscape, and not so fare away from the Frankfurt Region.
Unfortunaetly we stupid Germans are not using the Anderson Barracks,
the new Housing Area on the east site was renovated just after the last soldiers where moved out in 2007.
And even the grass is growing very high you can see on my Flickr Pictures the buildings in the family housing are still in good condition.
I think it is different in the barracks, because a lot of buildings are from the 50s and not so usefull, because here on the country side we have not so a high demand on single appartments.

So have a good time, and if you interested to see some more pictures from old Military Areas, just have a look on the following link:

      Cheers

    • Bernhard,
Thanks so much for the pictures. I was in Dexheim from 1986-88 as a dependent. I loved it there and had some amazing times and made life long friends. It is such a shame to see it in the condition it is in now.

  20. We were stationed at Anderson Barracks in 1990, and we were then relocated to Mannhiem, Coleman Barracks. I have very found memories of Anderson Barracks, a military post right in the middle of grape fields. We were stationed there when our daughter was born.
